We did a shore dive last night around 11pm after work in Laguna at fishermans cove. The air was cold with a 7mph wind. The waves were big 6 foot sets in certain spots, and the entire cove looked like a washing machine. Not a good sign. There were 5 fisherman there at that time up on the rocks, trying to shelter themselves from the waves. They were using 100# test line, with HUGE Squids as bait and steel leaders. They wre fishing for sharks. When diving at night, in really murky water, all I think about is frikin Teeth. These fisherman did not help.

Water was 59, coldest this season, and the nastiest rip current I have ever been cought in. It swept us out so far, so fast. Within 5 minutes we were at 60' and still a washing machine on the reef at that depth. My GPS said we were allready 1/4 of a mile off shore. Holly shit. We navigated very wide and made it back to shore in 32 minutes, and both of us used 95% of our air. 1 -2 foot vis the entire dive.

As I stood up onto shore, I was pulled backward and landed on my back, one of the fishermans hooks was caught on my BCD, he thought he had a fish and yanked hard with his shark rig. My buddy cut me free as we exchanged words with the fisherman, but they couldnt understand us.

Pretty scary dive. I knew we should not have gone in. F*%k these hurricanes.

Pray for vis and bugs.

I'm glad you made it back in one piece. I can't believe you went out in conditions like that, esp. at night. I almost drown doing something like that at Fisherman's Cove many years ago. That place produces a nasty rip tide when the surf is up. It may have something to do with the cove's small size and reefs that border the east and west sides, creating a funnel effect.

Dude, westand.com and look at the swell model. When the south swell bouy is over 3 ft it's not a good time in the water. I surfed yesterday and there were sets 2-3ft overhead down at Trestles. I admire your dedication :D

You and Will gotta see the vid I put together about our San Clemente trip. It got a few laughs...

westand.com is some youth church group and god would strike us all down if we landed full stringers of those "junior MONK fish".

I surfed @ trestles today with nothing but diving in mind, what a bummer, the water color was sort of a green rust color, not really poo water, just really ugly.I RRRREEALLY wanna get some bugs but I am going to be hard pressed to go out in water that turbid and colorful. Maybe everyone should wait until tuesday to go get thier Lobsters!!! Anyone see the water conditions in Laguna today? Same deal? Did somebody go traitor and sell the lobsters a Murky Water Kit???
