View Full Version : Barview Lings?
I have not been underwater for a bit and thought I would head out to the Oregon coast for a try at a ling over memorial day weekend. Has any one been out on the Barview jetty lately? If so how has it been.
thanks, Joe

Now tino lets go!!!
When is the Ling season anyway?
Oregon waters are open all year, 24 hours a day except ocean closed April 1 - Sept. 30 outside of the 40 fathom curve.
I went Sat. and Sun. and got a couple lings and a few nice rockfish. Could have got a lot of smaller rockfish, but just needed enough for some fish tacos.
Vis was average at about 8' or so.

Here is a pic of barview and a ling I got a while back. I did not take any pictures this weekend. The lings I got were just over the legal limit at 23". The Jetty does not produce The big Lings like the off shore sites do.
That's a whopper you got there though Inanity!!!!

Barview is just north of Tillamook. We hunt the Barview Jetty. That is the enterance to Tillamook Bay.
There is some really great hunting off shore out of Newport, Thats a little south of where we were at.

Oh man thats a healthy, fat ling! Nice Job. Thanks for the picture. I would love to see more pictures when you take them.
There is a little surf spot I got some good waves on just north of Brookings about an hour north of me. The waves were really good over this reef. I looked down in the water (12ft vis) and saw this massive ling swim under me. I havent been back up to dive that part of the coast as of yet. There doesnt seem to get that much pressure other than commerical boats.
Thanks for sharing.

Wow, you could see bottom from a surf board in Brookings?? Oregon conditions are pretty much the same as Trinidad... maybe even worse if thats possible. I wouldn't expect to get much better conditions going north than you get at home... could happen I just wouldn't expect it.

Your right, there is very little pressure in Northern Oregon from the dive community. For the most part they end up in Puget Sound or Hood Canal and most of them realy don't like spearfishing or fishing at all for that matter(threats of flat tires and such), so it ends up that most divers would rather not spearfish but dive in better vis up there and leave Oregon alone which has some really good spots to pick up your limit of nice black and blue rockfish, lingcod, cabazon, crab, clams and some places big rock scallops, but not so good vis and sometimes rough conditions.

That was my exact reaction.
I have talked with a couple of old timers who say Oregon is good at certain times of the summer. One guy told me he had 3 days of over 20ft vis in Aug. a few years back. I know a surfer from Cresent City who says the vis gets good up past state line on occasion.
I might make a trip up there in mid Aug. If any of you want to dive PM me and we'll hit it up.
