I love to drink and I love to dive too but I don't drink while on a dive trip. However, I do drink after a dive trip.
I have to admit that I have tried a 30 feet diving off the pier after being quite drunk at a resort. I will never do it again. It is just plain stupid, reckless and very dangerous.
The case I would like to write about is low level alcohol and 100+ feet dive. I have a Canadian friend who drinks beer like I drink coke. It between dives he pops a beer or two, I don't do that because in a day time drinking beer even two cans gets me sleepy, in night time and given the right situation , many more cans will be a different story....:D
I didn't do the dive that day as I was dead drunk the night before. I was waiting on the boat. So a few guys went down to this wreck at 140 feet at noon, after a hard day of partying the day before. This Canadian friend of mine pops 2 can of beer before the dive, he must be thirsty. He has been doing that ever since I knew him, so I guess it doesn't matter.
Later he surfaced, with another diver and here goes the story.......
At 100 feet, yes only a 100 feet, he somehow passed out on the descent line. His reg came out of his mouth for a few seconds and luckily my friend was there to help him. He lost conciousness for only a few seconds, when he probably swallowed sea water, it woked him up. A friend was there to witness and grab him or else, it will be a statistic. This Canadian guy could not believe that 2 cans of beer could do that and he has been doing that for a long time. Well I guess when one is not very fit, low level alcohol can make a weird effect . We been educated to avoid booze when diving, even a bit of booze. I guess I have to believe it now entirely, Murphy can set in anytime.
