Anyone know of a boat charter that will take out a group to the rigs during the week? Prefer Port A area but anywhere or anyone that will deal with newbies at spearing and maybe even teach a little or actually a lot.

Call Frogman's Dive shop in Port A. They will give you the number to a guy that's got a dive charter out of Port A. I don't know how to spell his name, but it's something like Capt. Mike McGleney? I think he's also a member of spearboard, so you might get a PM from him. Might also Google him to come up with something. Good luck,

Their weekend trips are almost full, but spots pop up occasionally. It's a six-pack boat and I don't know if he can crew it during the week, but he is a very nice guy so just shoot him an email. Prices are pretty reasonable for a three-drop day on an ac'd boat. The divemaster on board when I went was very knowledgeable and happy to share tips.

I was out snorkling the Jetty today (5/30) around 4:30 pm. The vis was not as good as it looked. Maybe 2 ft. I think is was better earlier in the day before the wind started to pick up. My buddy got several sheepshead. No big one but legal ones.
Hoping for clear water as the week goes on.

Yo Dan - there are several spearos in Austin. We train by freediving Lake Travis so we are in shape for the rigs offshore. If you are interested in hooking up, PM me. If you are not into freediving a local dive shop, Oak Hill Scuba, is a Riffe and JBL speargun dealer. Some of those guys at the shop hunt w/scuba as well. They can get you started. Good luck.

Also Asuba venture has rig trips. They run a few during the week like Tuesday or something. I know around the 26th they have a trip this month. I asked they said spearo's are ok. I was out at a rig out of Port A Sunday. Freediving actually wasn't that bad, but the vis was 4' or less the top 10 or so feet. Below that you could find snapper and spades. Saw some crevelle a bit deeper then I could get. Overall was pretty nice. Went with some Scuba guys they said they saw some cobia (small) and ALOT of small red snaps. They got one decent size though.
