Two days ago I reached a 3 min hold time!!! A 1:15 improvement over my previous best 6 months ago. I have to imagine that my diving in HI helped tremendously. I wish I could put this to use hunting but the airlines lost my gun on the way back to the mainland. Bastards. Guess that means it's time to upgrade. :thumps:

Congrats on the new PB breathhold. you got me beat by around 2.5min lol.
Sorry to hear you lost your gun though that would really suck.

Thats great man, is that a static or dynamic hold? You do have a buddy right there ready to help out don't you? Good Work.

It's a static hold. I've been using the local pool for pradtice and hold myself under so if anything happens I'll float up. now that I've been trying to go past 3 I do have a buddy.

Not trying to disappoint you or anything but static times have nothing to do with spearfishing bottom time.

you are kind of right, but at the same time, statics are a good measure of how much you are able to relax and slow your heart rate, the better you are at doing that the longer you dives will be, so they are somewhat related. Usually your dives will not exceed half of your static time.
Be sure to have a buddy watching you and right there in the water with you if you are going to do statics in a pool!!

Its more about dive reflex than anything. Static doesnt mean anything in spearfishing. Spearfishing is moving (dynamic) while static is not. If it were dynamic, then its a different story. :)

That, of course, depends on the hunt style as well. If you are doing aspettos, then a high static will translate over much better than it will bounce diving or prowling.

I disagree. Its just not that simple. If you want to dive deep and long, you have to spend a lot of time in the water simulating the same movements. In my opinion, static in a pool or on land wont let you dive deeper and longer. You still have to swim down to the bottom to do aspetto.
I dont have a good static but i have great bottom time at some deep depths.

Greek and Mike, interesting discussion. Keep at it as I am taking notes.

Working on statics does not simulate actual diving, but it does give you a chance to practice relaxing and slowing your heart rate, this practice can translate into being more relaxed and a slower heart rate durring a dive as well, so It could help, I doubt it could hurt....

now get to 4 min. good job on the 3 min. 3 min was a breakthrough for meReally? I just managed a 3:12 static myself. It felt a lot more like hitting a new wall than it did a breaktrough. Hitting 30' and being able to relax and look around a bit felt like a breakthrough. That 3:12 static just hurt like hell.
What to you guys focus on past 2:30? I can't get past it unless I have something outside to watch or focus my attention on. If I focus internally, like heartrate, everything goes to shit and it's game over at 2min.

sit on the couch and watch spearfishing DVD's.... that way you won't drown if you're by youself.

Just spend lots of time in the water. I would say cardio helps more than dry statics but both wont give you much more bottom time. Freediving a lot will.

I spend an hour a day in the water (pool). As a swimmer, and someone fairly new to freediving (scuba for 18 yrs), being able to relax and feel comfortable is THE most important thing. My second day of spearing had me at 45ft for 30-45 seconds.
My first dives were only to 20-25ft and after I was able to relax and get rid of the "buck fever", everything went smooth. In fact, as the day went on, I was able to stay down longer and longer.
After this morning's workout, a few of us decided to see how far we could swim under water by only kicking. We tried flutter kick, butterfly kick, and breaststroke kick. Each one of us had our favorite and by the third time down the pool, we were going 35-40meters on a single breath. Again, the first time, everyone was nervous/excited so just making a 25 meter swim was hard. After relaxing, we were easily tacking on 10-15meters using the same effort.

What was your favorite kick? When I do long underwater swims, I like a breast stroke and frog kick. I'm no great swimmer, but Ive managed 2 lengths in my pool that is about ~20ft long

Yep,you'll float up....face down  ....ALWAYS use a buddy. Have him tap you every 30 sec and you give an ok signal...

I like the breast stroke kick, but managed almost the same distance with an underwater fly kick (dolphin). It really depends on the person and preferences. Our freestylers don't have the ankle flexibility needed for a good breast stroke kick and us breast stroke swimmers don't have the flex. needed for a freestyle kick.
Today I brought my freediving fins and we played with those. Doing 50 meters under water with those was about as hard as doing it without them. I think it was due to the fact that we were trying to go fast and not concentrating on technique.

Ian,
Forgot to mention that if you can find a longer pool (Olympic size is best) it's easier to swim farther under water. You use a lot of energy turning around and pushing off the wall again. Good luck and let me know if you need any help. Swimming workouts, etc.

I am very new to spearfishing but very addicted, my breathhold time is pathetic, any tips on improving?
I've been working out in a pool for the last month since I've also very new. The first day 30-40 seconds was my best today I hit 2 minutes, but of course it was only static. I heard it's not good to do static times if your trying to spear because it doesn't simulate actual diving so instead I swim the bottom of the pool. It's odd because when I swim the best I can do is around 40 seconds. I'm still pretty out of shape so I hope I can get an avg of 1 min swimming with 1 min rest between and eventually cut that to 1 min hold with 30 seconds of rest.
