DFG closure of the sport fishery for cabezon, greenlings,
and California sheephead as of midnight on Wednesday, October 8, 2003

Existing DFG regulations provide for the closure of the sport fishery
for cabezon, greenlings, and California sheephead when allowable yearly
harvest levels have been reached. They have. Accordingly, the sport fishery
for cabezon, greenlings, and sheephead will be closed to all recreational
angling and diving activity in all waters, at all depths, and by all methods
of take, as of midnight on Wednesday, October 8. The closure will remain in
effect for the remainder of 2003.

Please be sure that the sport sheephead closure is brought to the attention
of any divers or freedivers who hunt.

The sport fishery for nearshore rockfish is also subject to closure
when yearly harvest limits have been reached. Current DFG data suggest
that this limit will be reached in early November, resulting in a closure of
this fishery for the remainder of the year. Watch for further
announcements.

My DFG guide isn't at hand now; what fish can be taken for the rest of the year?

With the exception of what's listed by the DFG. Rockfish, lingcod, yellowtail, white sea bass, scorpion fish (easily mistaken for cabazon), and halibut are allowed to be taken for remainder of year. Just be careful of all the new "protected" areas along the coast and at the Channel Islands. Also, as with all reg's they are subject to change. \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ \\\\\

For the first 6 months of this year they had a closure on all rockfish, lingcod, and cabazon for recreational take. Of course this did not apply to the commercial fleets. This fact caused such a uproar amoung us (recreation people) that this is why I think DFG did this closure for everyone and not just recreational fishers. Hopefully DFG will start making decisions based on what makes sense and not by who-pays-who off. Ok, I'll get off my soap box now. Take care....
