Its that time of year again. Last year, I started a thread like this and ended up meeting two new people and splitting a rental car from Newport News to the OBX. I booked my travel last week and I will arrive in Newport News at around 11 on Wed. night and I am leaving mid-day on Monday. I'd like to hook up with someone else and split car expenses.
Other than that, it is time to kill some fish up in Carolina. They are having a great year of fishing up there so far. Deep water, big fish, spearos from all over the world...doesn't get any better!

I'm amped...Hatteras is always a good time! We'll be coming in on I-40E to 64E if anyone needs a ride from GSO or RDU. Space for 1 maybe 2 if we bring the skiff.

When is the open? And does anyone have room on their boat? I will split cost as I am a boat owner also and know the ropes. I will trade a trip if someone wants to come shoot on the rigs here in LA.

Our boat is full, but there is no problem getting you on a boat as they use a number of charter captains. Your best bet is to contact Mark Laboccetta for more info. Their contact info is on the webpage.

Capt Don is awesome! The Fin Quest has more experience running freedivers than any other sportfisher in Hatteras. You guys will have a blast!

Any one that needs a place to stay give me a call. I have a condo in Hatteras with in walking distance of Hatteras Landing Marina where it is hosted. I'd be willing to cut a deal for someone in the tourney. I will be there also and have rented it to speros before. Thanks

So quiet here. There needs to be some smack talk going on! I am freaking pumped. Each year, from the day I leave Hatteras, I think about this tournament until the day I get back. I think about each dive in the blue water and whether I'll see a wahoo or a tuna, another 88lb AJ or a 35lb AP. Like Brando last year on one of the shallow wrecks, 80 feet deep and he sees a huge yellowfin tuna- too bad he choked. All my gear is decked out now- new bands, new line, new crimps. Let's do this thing!
BTW, no one is flying in on Wed night?

Dude I feel the same way. Hatteras is a crazy place you never know what you are going to see, that's what makes it so exciting. My girlfriend was giving me a hard time last night because there are a few things I have been putting off doing in our apartment. She said "All you have been doing lately is working on your spear fishing gear. You are OBSESSED!!" ha ha ha I told her I'll get it done when I get back from Hatteras but until then I'm busy. I'm predicting a Jersey sweep for the top spots. I don't think it will be such a surprise since Jersey is known for their Blue water hunters….
I'm counting down the days. See you guys down there

Ragin Cajun, The Colonel, Juanita Girl, and Blueh2oballs will be departing Orlando around 1200hrs on the 11th with the great white hope in Tow. There will be a minimum of 2 dozen spearguns, 87 extra shafts 1200 yards of 400lb test monofilament shooting line, 7 Filet knives, chum, 13 cases of Naty Light, 3 UW cameras, 15 pairs of Carbon fiber fins, 12 wetsuits, 43 gloves, a ar of mustard, 2 lbs of turkey and a bag of Pretzels.
Ready to kill fish.
Drink cheap Beer,
Make fun of the inbreds in NC,
Stay in a flea bag motel,

The Floridians are back in effect this year! By my count we should have at least a dozen divers in the water and probably more. Somehow, we let the left coasters infiltrate our ranks at the top of the leader board in the recent past. I predict that the smack will be laid down this year by the Florida Boys- In spite of the fact that OMER has laid down the spearfishing equivalent of the "Jordan Rules" in order to hold us down.
It is worth traveling to the Open just to see the gear show and talk to the true masters of our sport. Seriously, it is rumored that some of these guys actually have pilot fish that swim with them as they hunt. Whippersnappers like me have to kiss the ring.

Here is your updated Hatteras Report. Bluewater everywhere, Very little current everywhere, Fish everywhere. Cam and Blake, are you and your merry band of Florida pranksters going to wear matching trunks like you did the year Cam won? It seemed to work for you. I'm going to the Proteus, British Splendor, and Dixie Arrow tomorrow. I'll report later.............
Watch the inbred local jokes, we are sensitive about our sisters

That was a mistake. Won't happen again. We demoted the Colonel for that idea, and he is still trying to work his way back up the chain for that decision.

Jordan Rules for Florida and Carolina Boys:
3. The boats will be leaving Hatteras Landing Marina and the other Marinas the boat dock at no sooner than 6:30am every morning, although loading the boat can begin as early as the divers want. Diving starts officially at 8:00am. All boats regardless of local marinas departed from, will weigh in at Hatteras Landing Marina by 5pm each day.
4. Upon arrival on site, a lottery will be held to allocate each pair of divers to a boat on a daily basis. This will ensure that there is no preference for boat or captain.
5. Divers trailoring their own boats to Hatteras may launch from any of the three boat ramps provided they weigh in their fish at Hatteras Landing Marina by 4pm every day.
Jed lives there so we are not trailering his boat anywhere. For everyone else, I think it is pretty cheasy. Especially because some of the private boats are slower than the charter boats are.

Russel is an asset to our team! in my opinion he does'nt need any pilotfish... One says that he is a master in telepathic communication with fish and that he could destabilize the opponent spearos. If you get terrified by his special power, you should bring us some beer/ coke as a gift, before leaving Friday at 6 am: the name of the boat is FIN QUEST.(no Pepsi please)
ROBERTO REYES

Roberto don't listen to the Northerners, I believe that it is illegal to bring Coke or any other sort of South American Pharmaceuticals into the country so you don't need to smuggle anything up for the Fin Quest.
for everyones' information, just because he has a Spanish name doesn't mean he is a Drug Lord.
He does however possess the power of the pilot fish and can summon them at will enabling him to hide amongst them and spear fish much bigger than himself. (meaning fish over 82 lbs).
Vaminos! Lets get up there and get some fish!

Would like to share the fact that I took part to the first Hatteras BWH in 2002 and that at the time it was my first steps in an U.S. compet... except Mark I knew no one in the circle, so I felt like a "fish out of water". Back from a long SF trip in West Africa and due to the very trying conditions over there, I was not feeling too good (and sick).
Roberto (and his buddy Leo visited) us in the camping and showed himself pretty pleasant and friendly. Thank's a lot.

After a long, hard day of prepping for the Open in the Homossassa scallop grounds, I returned to find that the rule change was a typo. I think it made for good drama, but what can you do. After 400 x 2.5 foot freedives I finally feel ready for the big-time! We killed the scallops and its time to feast.

I know it is probably out of the question but if there is anyone who is coming in Friday morning to Norfolk there is a beautiful young Japanese girl that needs a ride to Hatteras.
Her brother Yoshi will be diving in the tournament and his sister who lives in California is making the trip over to see him as they rarely get to see each other. If anyone has any info on the best way to get her to Hatteras let me know. I am thinking a taxi or Town Car is the best idea as she has no license to drive.
Thanks if anyone can help. If not keep the hell away from her in Hatteras as her brother is an excellent spearfisherman and even better with a pole spear.

Things you will here in Hatteras this year.
Does my ass look big in these speedos?
Man I just had this huge yellowfin fall off my shaft.
Gr, do you have any more vaseline?
How deep is it?
Cam, What's that rash on your stomach?
I bent my shaft!

Some more things you will hear:
Can we add stripers, sheephead and tautog?
15-20kts with 6-8 foot seas isn't that bad with a 2 second interval.
If we wish hard enough, the strong winds might blow the seas down a couple of feet.
Is 6 a.m. too early for a beer?
Who is that guy with the red hat, red shirt, red speedo, red crocs and red speargun?

The euro turned into a red, white, and blue blooded American mid-handle for my Dad, and it is almost ready for finishing. It's a 51" teak and padauk gun for a 9/32 shaft - very similar to my black gun.
Onward to Hatteras!

Unfortunately I barely got acclimated there due to a sidetrack into the exciting world of seasickness - which was way more fun than I could possibly have imagined. I want to go back and spend more time >70ft. Most of the really cool stuff was down there.
