I am moving into an area that has no high speed cable service. I have looked at the available directv and dish network but their upload speeds are not fast enough. I have to work remotely on computer systems all accross the US and have to have a quicker upload than dial up.
I am thinking about Hughes Net and wondering if anyone here has that service or can recomend one that is a two way system.
Thanks
P.S. I am going to really miss my 15meg service I currently have...

That's what you get for moving to the sticks,Steve.

I had Direcway (direcway became Hughes net) about 3 years ago. Upload speeds very slow. Also the system would not allow you to VPN into another network. Thunderstorm or heavy clouds speeds will slow down even more. Their service may have changed. I have not had their service in quite some time but I don't believe you will be able to VPN into remote networks. At that time I was getting average download between 512-768 Kb but uploads were between 64-128 Kb upload.

I'm with ya there. I'm currently on the 15meg down, 2meg up service.
Do they have cell service out there? Have you looked into one of those aircards? I have one and it is faster than dial up and I can browse Spearboard while driving down the interstate!
We had satellite credit card authorization when I worked in the restaurant biz. Damn thing would go out with the smallest rain storm.

The seismic crews use a sat system for data transfer both ways. REALLY HUGE data files are involved in it, such that it chokes even a T1 line. Internal networks even choke on them if you try to process them in real time. I don't have the cost numbers but a large 3' to 4' diameter parabolic dish should handle most of the weather related disruptions provided you can keep it aimed properly. The numbrs I've heard for some services is n the neighborhood of $1.5K/mo

I have Direcway for my spearing/baja days. It's about $60/month and the down speed is about 600K, up speed is about 100K.
Better than nothing when you are in the sticks. But for my house, we are on Cox cable. 18M down, 1.5M up.
Also, be careful of FAP (fair access policy). If you download more than a certain amount per 24 hour, Direcway will throttle you back to like 15K (not spelling error) speed for 24 hours as a penalty. Yeah, it sucks when that happens. You can research FAP.
I heard Wildblue is a good system if you are in the US strictly, but I have no first hand experience.

Steven,
I use Barbara at RVnetworking.com. She's in Yuma, AZ but she is extremely knowledgeable and she got me hooked up in no time.

I got WILDBLUE and it works for me. They have different speeds for diff per month price. I got the cheep one for $50 its slower than highspeed. They claim the more expensive plan is as fast as highspeed. I dont know i only do spearboard and ebay.

How important is the speed to you? You could always pay for a T1 out to your site or if you've got the bucks and really need the speed you can get a fiber. But you really need to be doing some serious networking to do that. But a T1 might be a decent compromise and if you are self employed you should be able to write off some of it.

I don't think you will be very happy with the latency on Satellite systems. The 3 or 4 that I've supported have *SUCKED*. I'd see if you can get a T1, they are cheap nowadays. Even a frac T1 will be better than a sat hookup. Actually, I would prefer ISDN over a Sat connection for remote connections and such.

Steven let me know if you decide on a T1. I sell them for a living. I cannot service your area but being in the business I can find you a good deal.
