I killed these two yesterday. Vis. around 15 feet and temp. at 74. Fish were in about 20-25 feet of water laying on the mud bottom. Baitfish everywhere! One fish was 17 and the other 15 pounds. My 82 cm Aimrite stoned these fish like I've never seen. Thanks Rick! Saw a couple big ones that I didn't get shots at, but I'll be back. -Hey THE STRANGER, you ready to kill some more fish?

Nice! Great pics, thanks for sharing. Is there a size limit for pike up where you live?

No size limit, no bag limit on a few lakes here. Lots of pike, but can't spear much else-not even rough fish.

Always cool to see pics of fish speared in freshwater. I've yet to try spearing in freshwater, but will hopefully soon enough!

That's awsome! Here in California the only freshwater fish we can spear are carp, and then only in certain areas and certain seasons. Someone introduced pike to one of our lakes, (Lake Davis), awhile back and they have been devastating the native trout population. They've poisoned the lake and killed everything in it, except the pike, who have made a comeback. They still won't let us spear pike in Davis, and if you catch one on hook and line, you are required to kill it and turn it over to Fish and Game. Sure be fun to have a go at them with a speargun!

Ron, we have a similar situation with the pike here. There are a few lakes and rivers they won't let us spear. The trout populations in those waterways have fallen sharply. The pike's tolerance of cold water is at the heart of the trout issue, as they can inhabit the same water. The trout has a natural appeal to the pike as a high oil content fish. The same holds true for kokanee salmon which we have locally. The fish seen here were speared in Salmon Lake, a lake named for those salmon. The pike here seem to hit a certain size and become deep water predators (tout, salmon, whitefish, ciscoe). Both of the fish pictured here were chalk full of rolls of fat-evidence of a good food supply. Just trying to do my part here and have some fun in the process. Approach state GOV. regarding current regulations. Good luck

Well the funny thing is, a couple years ago I called our DFG headquarters in Sacramento and asked about the legality of shooting carp with a speargun. After being transferred to five different people who didn't know the answer, one individual said, "why don't you go up to Lake Davis and spear some of those damn pike? That'd help us out." I asked if she was serious and if it was legal and she said she didn't know why it wouldn't be legal. I then contacted a local Warden and asked him. He said if I was caught in or near Davis with a speargun, it would be confiscated and I would be cited. Said it was illegal to spearfish or be in possession of a speargun in Davis, and to leave the pike alone. They're willing to poison an entire lake, (which is a local water supply), to kill pike, but heaven forbid I should consider trying to put a steel shaft through one or two...
It's a fairly shallow lake with good underwater weed beds, and would be a real kick to spearfish in. Oh well.

Nice Pike, I used to catch those on H&L in Canada as a kid and on trips back up there to see relatives now. Closest thing here in Florida are the Cudas!

Great pikes! Congratulations! How do you hunt them? I mean where do they hang out?

I've been up to that lake once or twice and dove it and it would be a great place to spear. I'm in cali also and don't understand why the entire state is so against spearing, but so for poison? I have never bothered trying to find out if you could spear, but we should start a petition and send it up to Sacramento! Since I work at a law firm I'll ask one of my buddies what's the best way to rattle the political chain!
