Hello I used to spearfish about 15 years ago and back then the Magnum 3 rubber speargun was the best you could buy. I have been told the advances in the guns has been great. I also was told that the SS Commercial Speargun in Teak wood would be the best choice for the money. The other choice was a Darrel Wong.
Any comments and advice woud be helpfull. Thank you>

The SS guns shoot straight and are well built.....you cant go wrong with a SS gun, whether it be rhino, teak, mahagony, etc.

Hmmm..... your statements/questions almost sound like a troll..... there are many good post on Wongs and SS guns already in the All About Guns section. They should give you plenty of information.

go rhino from SS. you can ask around or call kevin (spear one) there at the shop. (not this week he is out of town) and he will tell you what kind of gun you need for the fishing you do. SS is great i got commercial muzzle a while back and it shoots sooo smooth. it is the best.

I like the Riffe guns but it is all personal preference.

With all the respect in the world to the ss gun, lets face it, it is a sea hornet and they are nothing special, The improvements by spear one probably make it a whole lot better but out of production guns, the seahornet does not rank anywhere near the riffes in quality, silence and performance. Add to this the silence of the riffe and range compared to the seahornets and there is really no competition in any area. IF you want a superior gun which will price out the same asthe riffe island, you should take a look a Kittos or Kesby made in australia. However, they are not as nice or as good as Daryl Wong gunsl This is simply a superior gun. You have the best teak, enclosed track for freeshafting or line shooting and there is absolutely no shaft whip. You can power it up or down according to your situation and the aimrite trigger is one of the best. Ad to this the fact that wong will make the gun with a super enforced muzzle either theirs or an alexande muzzle, Besides the gun having an enclosed track which is the guns best feature, you also have internal weigths which greatly reduce recoil. I still have not found a negative for this gun plus Daryl will consult with you about exactly what youre looking for and then make it for you!! How much more could anyone ask for!!! I cant speak for the ss gun as I have never shot one but it does not have any of the above mentioned characteristics. The price of a wong gun is anywhere between 400 and 1500 bucks so it just depends a lot on how much you can spend. I will say this, I did see the ss gun in action and it does a great job

I have a 52" SS Commercial Rhino and I love it. I started with a JBL Woody Magnum, went to a teak Biller, and now the SS- It is by far the best shooting gun I have owned.

JC, I dont understand the whole idea of a gun being so silent. Is it a freediving thing or what ? When your in the middle grounds you do not need those long shoots that you refer too.

Reel, in part youre right, it is more of a freedive thing. However, FA had a shot at abig gag in the middle grounds when i visited there for the first time and when the fish came off his shaft, i got a 20 foot shot on a 60 lb gag which was needed as the fish was tailing away. If there had been a noise from the gun the fish would have had plenty of time to change course before the shaft ever got there. But youre right it is more of a freedivin thing as I saw you can mostly get 5 foot shots out there and then noise is not a big issue.

I have seen a few SS guns laying on the bottom, and I have not bothered to pick them up.

JC, how many have you seen? Do you pick them up to give away?

I'd probably start off with a simple, easy gun to handle and work my way up with practice and preference.

Good guns to start off with;

SS Commercials, Billers (I don't recommend JBL)

Subsequent Choices;

Riffes, Rob Allen Railgun, Rabitechs, Euroguns (Omer, Beuchat, Picasso, etc...)

As you become more experience you can start venturing for the best of the best;

Wong, Kittos, etc...

I started off with a JBL and Pole spears, now I'm at the Omer and Rob Allen level, as my freediving/spearfishing skills improve I'll put forward the funds and go for gold (Wongs). In the end, it's mostly hand-eye coordination. Good Luck!

Lucky-shot, please read outside the box.

I'm sure most people who read the earlier post, could have detected just a bit of sarcasm. I'm sorry you did not!

I didnt see any sarcasm there either. Maybe the placement of a :D would have cleared up any misunderstanding?

Funny the guys that dive the rigs on scuba shoot a lot of JBL guns and I have never heard them say a thing about the guns making too much noiseand missing shots because of it . Also how many commercial spearfishermen use a WONG or a Riffe ?? I would venture to say not many if any at all. Now why do you think that is??? The fact of the matter is all guns make noise whether you want to believe it or not . If anyone wants to say they have a gun that makes less noise than I feel they should have some PROOF not just some B.S. opinion!!

As for you Aguaji maybe you could post some PICS of fish that you have killed

Reef – I’m a commercial diver and I use a Wong speargun. I think the original post on this thread was most likely a troll (a well thought out troll) and I thought the thread would begin to deteriorate. A lot of people take pride in the guns they use and use them because that is what they like. People who have stepped up to a custom gun may feel a little more this way because of the time, money, and thought they put into the purchase of their gun. Nor is it fair to the production gun manufactures to have their guns compared to the guns of the custom gun makers. Because the fact is, there is no comparison.

I think RJ made some very good points in his post and someone considering purchasing their first gun or looking to upgrade should consider his points. You just need to know your needs and how easy you want spearfishing to be.

Wow, talk about an ignorant statement! So let me get this straight, unless you take pictures of the dead fish you speared you are not necessarily a good spearo. What an F'in joke this guy is. So are we supposed to glorify a lifeless creature just to prove a point? I can name right off the top of my head dozens of world-class spearos who will outshoot most of the members of this board (including myself) who have never once taken a picture of their kill.

So are we supposed to venture out with digital cameras all the time and pump our egos up with "pat in the back" stories? What gun? What depth? What viz?, etc... In this age of technology are we destined to grade ourselves as quality hunters by the quality of photo film?? Give me a break. Dude, I can care less what gun you use. You can use a damn kitchen knife for all I care. But now we have to take pictures of dead prey to substantiate our points. I have slayed plenty of fish at respectable depths, but I don't carry around a photo album. Does that make me a farce or does it simply state that I just kill fish for the sport and consumption.

C'mon think before you make a such a statement!

My name is Rolando Jorge Veloso and I DO NOT own a digital camera!

If someone like you (ROLANDO) thinks I'm ignorant then I'l take that as a complement THANKS

I believe the tone of RR's posts may be due to the fact that Aquaji never actually posts ANYTHING about his trips, what he did, etc... He chooses only to bash others.

I also do not care what gun you use, but I also do not take people like Aquaji seriously when they never make a valid post, just troll BS one after another.

Reef Raider,

Once again, you prove your ignorance. If you closely read my post, you may realize or begin to comprehend that it's not about the pics. It's about taking pics to prove a point DUDE!

This post has been downgraded from a previous "R" rating to "PC" (Politically Correct, that is )
