I've been scouting some of the shallow reefs off Palm Beach and I'm thinking a polespear might be the best tool for a few reasons. I think it will be easier to schlep to the beach than my rabi 110, I wouldn't need a float line, and for dives less than 30 feet a polespear will give sufficient range.

I don't like those cheap yellow polespears everyone seems to sell. I saw a gold/aluminum JBL 7' with a paralyzer tip for $45 that lookes acceptable, but a search turned up mixed reviews. Then there's the travel polespears like Ray Odor and JBL make which would be really easy to take to the beach if I rode my bike or something, but they seem to stop at 6' and I think I'd like a longer spear. Any more opinions about the JBLs or the Odor, or any other suggestions?

Ray Odors comes with a 12 inch extension don't forget. It's total of 7 feet. It's plenty for what you intend on hunting. If you want another 2 feet he sells it as an add on and it' s his cost. He's the most honest person I've ever dealt with and I'm buying 2 from him this weekend.

Spleen-The Odor pole spear is great, I picked one up this winter and have been using it a lot this summer in depths 20-40 ft and it works great. I set it up with a paralyzer tip and have done pretty good with fish in the 3-5 lb range. With the 12" extension and the length of the paralyzer tip it comes close to 8'. I taped a piece of bright orange tape on it to make it easier to find if I drop it.

Don't go with something that is short such as 6'. Get one that is 8' or 9'. Also, I would recommend you customize it for maximum effect. Check some of the other threads on pole spears for different ways you can do this.

Here’s a link to my pole spear site. http://members.cox.net/azspearo/
Right know I build 6' one piece spears with 2 piece 6' and 8' spears coming in the near future.
The 6' spear has a total length of 7'2" w/12" shaft and w/18" shaft total length is 7'8".
My website doesn't have all the specs of the spears yet but they are made using 6061-T6 aluminum. Shafts are 17-4. Slings are 1/2" od.
