Since the Tenkiller Marathon was cancelled this year, we decided to go south to Texas and try to shoot the biggest buffalo we could find.
I found it!
We shot several over 40lbs, just as many in the 30s, and passed on anything below 20.
All fish we shot between 25 and 40 feet deep. We had to use a separate line attached to a float after my dad bent his spear into a horseshoe on his first 43lb buff.
We had viz up to 10 ft near the dam. Weather slowed down the fishing as the week progressed or we may have hit one in the 60s.
The buffs were not numerous, but the carp were everywhere. The carp all averaged in the 8 to 10 pound range with the biggest 23lbs.
What a blast!

Mark, are you and Steve ready to go with us next year? I want to catch the spawn and we may end up with a 70 lb buff. The lake record is 84 lbs. How was Tenkiller?

Do a search on "Mookie", and you will find the carp and buffalo.
Man, I was at Rayburn all weekend! Even drove across the dam Saturday evening. Wish I would have had my guns instead of my chainsaw though! :thumps: Did ya'll see any big cats?

I've had buffalo ribs before and they are very tasty. I use to never eat buffalo but a friend introduced them to me a while back and they are very good. It was the rib bone with fish meat in between cut with three ribs in each piece. Looks like those size buffalo would make some nice rib cuts.

Yes, buffalo is related to the carp, and like carp they are omnivores. When a carp or buffalo reaches those sizes, they will push any fish off it's nest and eat all the eggs. During the Marathon a few years ago we found a pattern for buffalo. . . we found small trees in about 25 feet, the black bass were "escorting" their young in small schools, when buffalo would swim through the school and suck up the young. We watched this 3 times in 20 minutes, and turned in all three buffalo at the weigh in.
Tenkiller in recent years has a lot of silt on the bottom and the buffalo can have a strong muddy flavor, In the Illinois river below the dam the buffalo are feeding on a rocky, sandy bottom and have a clean taste.

What a blast!Greetings from frozen North Dakota. I would like to ask if you will be going to Texas or any other state for some monster carp or catfish spearing in 2009. Please let me know I would like to join you. Also can you tell me if you where hunting on scuba or free diving. Thank you.

I sure wish the republic of California would loosen up on the freshwater spearfishing regs so we could clear more of our carp out of the game waters here. Great job of pulling those monsters out! Looks like some way fun times there boys!

BBQ buffalo carp? Never heard of that. Wish we had them that big around here. Although in lake michigan and some other lakes we get common carp up to the 40-50lb range.

Monsters!! The last big carp I got while finishing grad school in Iowa was a 61 pound buffulo that I bowfished; I had heard they are good eatting but got to thinking about the pond it came from and had, in my case, 'second thoughts'... But the family of raccoons behind my house sure were happy about it :D
The rib idea does sound intersting though...
