View Full Version : Paddy Hopping with FLASHERS

I was wondering if anyone had any success using flashers while paddy hopping our local waters. I have jumped alot of paddies lately that look promising but hold nothing but bait. Occasionally, I think I see glimpses of fish way down below- but the bluewater I think can trick the eyes. Anyway, these "dry" paddies might be holding fish deep, that are already stuffed with the bait that seems to be loaded on each one. Maybe a flasher could spark their interest and bring them up for a look. Or keep the fish around when they are there so a few guys can get shots off, not just the first one in. Any input on this is appreciated and if you've made some, what styles have you found to be the most effective. Thanks. :thumps:

ive used metal spoons on the reefs and they seem to attract the fish pretty well, but ive had no experience with using it in the paddies. just thought id add my 2 cents even though i didnt really answer your question

I have never seen one used in the way you describe, but FWIW, Jeff Bonisa (AKA Bluegill) has had some luck using a flasher to make fish a bit more curious (when they're already around). However, I think it's hard to determine how important the flasher is, since he may have gotten the fish anyway. It can't hurt though.

Hi Dennis,
I thought about the same thing but with high spots included. I think that you would need to have a person on the boat who would use a fishing rod to lower and raise the flasher down 100' or more. I have yet to try it but will probably give it a go before the summer is over.

The fad I made earlier this year works good on the edge of the beds to bring up curios fish.I have not thrown it on a paddy ,in the blue yet but stay tunned.FAD consists of an old bass reef marker with no hooks and blades and such tied to the line.search FAD fish attracting device.

I have used flashers with success on paddies.
If the fish are holding deep, I'll take a flasher with one of those chicken floats and about 40 of line on it, and swim it down 60-80ft, and when it floats back up a lot of the time the fish will follow it.
Good luck!

Does anyone that paddy hops with reels ever clip on a piece of 20-30 ft of poly line with flashers on it? It seems like it would work pretty good.. That and it would help you out if your reel ever locked up and you needed extra leverage to muscle a fish up, or get your head above the water without losing your gun.

Flashers and chum (or burley) should work well to attract fish

I’ve used a flasher tied to the end of a buoy which kept them curious, never dropped one deep though.

I use flashers from spearfishing.com as well as salmon flashers they attach to my floatline also have the pretty fins that you can see a mile away (during WSB season i had to spraypaint them back to camo green after john hanson told me that he almost pulled on me therefore reinforcing the fact that all types of seacreatures get attracted to them) :D

Joe,
I’ve never heard of using ‘pretty fins’. Do you just get creative and spray paint them silly colors?
