Word from the Ft. Bragg area of California is that we have winners of the 2007 Nationals. My good friend Dave Edlunds (USoA Tournament Director) just called in to me the more expanded results which are added below.

Congratulations go to these fine men and women's winners:

Men's winner - Dennis Haussler

This is the second win for Dennis. He won in the year 2000.]:toast:

Women's winner - Amanda Ernst

The daughter of World Record White Sea Bass holder Bill Ernst. Amanda is an amazing 17 year old young lady!:thumps:

The Rankings are as follows:

Top Five Men's Winners:

1.) Dennis Haussler

2.) Paul Castillou

3.) Mike Pender

4.) Mike McGuire

5.) Dave Edlunds

Top Five Women's Winners:

1.) Amanda Ernst

2.) Janis Smith

3.) Brandi Easter

4.) Faye Swenson

5.) Tonya Beirne

Top Men's Team Members:

Dennis Haussler, Mike McGuire and Alan Stehar

Top Mixed Team Members:

Robin Hie and Brandi Easter

Way to go everyone! (sorry about any name mispellings)

Dave then gave us the scoop on the current standings for the U.S. International Teams for the World's competition next year:

U.S. International Top Men's Team Rankings:

1.) Mojarra Guinovart

2.) Mike Pender

3.) Harolf Dean

4.) Dave Edlund (alternate)

5.) Mike Hickey and Dennis Hausslar (tied) (optional)

U.S. International Top Women's Team Rankings:

1.) & 2.) Sheri Daye & Amanda Ernst (tied)

3.) Faye Swenson

4.) Janis Smith (alternate)

5.) Brandi Easter (optional)

This is getting exciting as it looks like the USA is going to field an amazing and talented pair of teams to represent us at the World's Competition next year. Dave says the top three are the team, but the subsequent positions are alternates or optionals. I know it is a bit confusing, but Dave said he will explain further after tonight's banquet. For more info on that event see this link:

Hi all,

I will attach below the individual and team results for the 2007 U.S. National Spearfishing Championships.

As Tony Grogan has mentioned, Dennis Haussler won the men's division and Amanda Ernst won the women's division. Robin Hie and Brandi Easter won the Mixed team divison and Dennis Haussler, Mike McGuire and Allan Spehar won the Men's team division.

Dennis Haussler caught the biggest men's lingcod at 19.9 lbs. and Amanda Ernst speared the biggest women's fish, a 19.0 lb. lingcod.

This tournament determined who would represent the U.S. in International (Pan- Americas and World) tournaments for the next two years. U.S.O.A rules require that we add the scores for the Florida and Northern California Nationals and then rank the divers by the highest scores. That is why Amanda Ernst and Sheri Daye are tied for the top two Women's International spots as both won a National tournament while only competing in one of the two Nationals. The U.S. will have strong men's and women's International teams and their first event is the upcoming men's Pan-American Spearfishing games that come up the first week of October. The American men's team is still being finalized, but will be based around a super strong core of Florida divers lead by the talented Moharra Guinovart, the only U.S. diver I know who has speared fish at 140 feet while freediving.

How come Sheri Daye was listed under international team rankings but not in the US nationals rankings?

Hey Rinaldo,

Sheri Daye and Mike Hickey won last year's Nationals for the women and men's divisions. They had enough points to end up on the lists above. I also added the article Dave Edlunds wrote in Spearfishing Magazine about Getting to the World Championships.

Enjoy the read,

Tony

Here are some photos from the 2007 Fort Bragg, CA Nationals.

1) Dennis Haussler with the John Ernst Award. John Ernst was the top US Men's diver 15 times. Dennis only needs 13 more victories! :) Dave Edlund lifting the perpetual John Ernst Award.

2) Mike Van Haele and Dave Edlund stand in front of the Fort Bragg staging area. Dave holds carbon paddles, matrix fins and wears a new Picasso wetsuit. Life can not get much better!

3) Carl Krupansky's Men's team (L to R) Justin Smith (alternate), Dave Edlund, Bob Humphrey and 73 years young Carl Krupansky

4) Women's All-American Team (Janis Smith, Amanda Ernst, Brandi Easter and Faye Swenson)
