Mako Mike, Trevor, and I left the dock out of Matagorda Sat. around 4PM on Mike's 20' Mako. The seas were flat, and we were loaded down! We ran out, occasionally stopping to troll some "activity" we saw on the way out.
We ended up on a rig about 40 miles out, the vis was great. Trevor and I made our first dive around 6:30 PM. All we could come up with was a little ling and some kind of Jack I have never seen before. So, we decided to motor over to a nearby rig and see if we could have any more success. We did! Mike jumped in free diving, and I only took his pony bottle down to check things out to see if we wanted to dive it in the morning. It was getting dark and we were running out of time. Well, one pony bottle and a 35lb. AJ later we decided we were going to stay. Almost forgot Mikes 15lb, Dog Snapper! Any way, we made a couple more dives on that rig in the morning (should have only made one). Trevor Shot some Huge Barracuda. Then we went into about 15 miles and Mike made some nice free dives before I messed him up with my SCUBA. Anyway, we had to come in because we were out of cooler space. I think the final total went something like this.
10 Dog Snapper
1 Cobia
2 Amberjack (both went about 35lbs.)
8 Sheephead
2 shark (rod and reel)
1 Grouper (rod and reel)
3 Barracuda (biggest was 35-45lbs)
40lbs of shrimp (product of some nice trading by Mike)
8 hours of solid sleep.
Here are some links to pictures and videos. I think Trevor will have some more latter.
