I just picked up a cressi SL 70 on a trade. Would this gun be good for walleye and northern's back home in the midwest, or would I want somthing a little larger?
Thanks, James

James, should be fine for walleye. Big pike may give you a little trouble, but they are fairly soft skinned and thin scaled. The only shortcoming might be the range if you can find clear water.

Yea, big pike is what I'd be after next time I go back home. What would you recommend?

I use a Mares Cyrano 850and have never found it lacking. I use it both fresh and salt water and I have shot everything from walleyes to amberjack with it.

Your gun is just fine. I use a 70cm pnumatic and have killed pike, walleye, bass, carp, all kinds of game... The important thing to remember is to rig your gun to what your hunting. If your hunting larger fish then use a float and breakaway set up if your hunting smaller fish then you can attach your shaft to your gun. Pump your gun up a ton and you will have the range to kill good size pike at distance. Take care and I hope this helps you out.

James, can you use guns that aren't rubber driven in MN?

When I go back home I will not be spearfishing in MN. I plan to make a few trips around the midwest since the fishing regs in MN are horrible. I fished Sakakawea and Ft. Peck off and on for the last 10 years and always caught a lot of big pike and walleye there, but I have not been back home since i have been stationed overseas and learned to spearfish.

I'd be glad to meet up with you at Fort Peck. I know there are some HUGE walleyes in there. Let me know if you ever need a dive buddy out here.

Sounds good the only question is my leave. I originally had it set up for Aug. then it got pushed back to Sept. then that got cancelled. I just put in for leave in Oct. I should find out if it's approved in a few weeks, I will let you know if it is.
Do you know anywhere else to try I will be able to make a couple of trips, I will most likely hit Ft. peck for shure. Also, it has to be getting kinda cold around Oct. how thick of wetsuit should I get?

I use a 5mm two piece with hood. I am ok to about 48 degree water for an hour or so. If it gets colder than that there is always some hunting to do on dry land. Let me know what happens as far as your leave.
