Going to Belize in several weeks and am
looking for good suggestions about islands to hit, territory to cover, places to stay, and people/boats to contact.

I stayed at blackbird resort on turneffe a couple years back for some bonefishing, fishing was great, but wouldn't recommend the resort. didnt bring a gun, but i saw some monster grouper and snapper while diving. beautiful area, enjoy!

Here is a sponsor of the Spearboard Open that you might consider.

Hard to tell exactly where Spiritwind is. I am assuming it is somewhere around Dangriga.
You will not get any clear water or good diving/spearing inside the barrier reef because there is very little visibility. You have to either go out to the outside of the barrier reef or in the passes leading outside the reef. The only other choice is to go out to one of the three atolls off the coast. Of the three, I thought that the southern atoll, Glovers Reef had the best spearing. (Check to see if they received much damage from Hurrican Dean, because the three atolls are completely exposed and have no protection at all.)
The problem you will have is that if you are staying at a resort on the coast you must have access to a boat to really do any diving at all. I was lucky and was down there on my own boat for a year so I could take my time and check it out. Even if you stay at the one resort that is on each of the three atolls, you will need a boat to access good areas.
If your focus is spearfishing, I would contact the resorts on the atolls and ask if they will allow spearfishing and if they can set up trips for you. If your focus is more than diving & spearing then I would recommend you stay at a resort on the coast where there is access to more things to do and see.

I don't know what your talking about. In Caye Caulker I dove several places inside the reef with EXCELLENT visibility.

I was in Belize in April. I had a private 38 ft boat with local commerical fishermen as guides. We ran all over turneffe for four days. Great reefs and bottems, no fish. It was very very over fished. I was not impressed at all. I live in miami which is very over fished. But I could caught about the same in Miami. Caye Calker is the coolest fishing town I have ever seen. Food is great the fish is imported. The spearfishing sucks.
