Went to the pool today to work on some breath holding. I took along some flashers I made for La Paz. After working with my flashers and seeing which shapes worked the best I decided to warm up and do some laps. I started cycling. ( cycling is when you swim on the surface and then return back on the bottom... Rest for 15 sec longer then you held your breath) After about an hour or so I decided to give a go of it working on my static breath hold. I of course did this with one of the lifeguards standing just a couple feet from me. My first attempt was only a min thirty to open the lungs up. After resting a couple of min. I did a two min 15 sec hold. I felt good and rested up for several min. I felt really calm and at peace as I was breathing up and with the watchfull eye of the lifeguard I went for it. My personal best up to this time was a three min two sec. I was passing two min and thirty sec on this final attempt and I knew I had it because I didn't have any real chest palpitations. as the three min mark was hitting I was having some chest palpitations and feeling light headed but I held on til after I passed my previous mark I came up at 3 min 4.9 sec. After coming up I was elated but also felt like I could have gone a bit longer. I guess I just didn't really feel that comfortable with the lifeguard watching me. I know there trained but you always have that little bit in the back of your mind questioning it.

Congrats! No pool to practice in here so i practice in the back yard (I've actually only done two static practices since I was 16 :) ) Awesome the lifeguard is willing to spot you!

Congrats, Scuba! I practice in the pool almost every weekday, but my breath holds are light years from your best. I increase it by a second every day until I get to my personal record, whenever that will be :) My first underwater stretch (lap) across the pool has been my longest breath hold so far, moving though, not static. I think I'll do just static from now on so as to increase my time for the future. I do 30 minutes underwater moving with the breath hold then 30 minutes above, swimming. No lifeguard assistance, though, even though those beautiful girls are eye candy motivation :O

30 minutes underwater???? Thats a hell of a breath hold... If you mean seconds then thats a great place to start. I usually do 30sec intervals when I am training as well for about 10 min. 30sec topside 30sec underwater. Then I'll start to cycle. Always trying to extend the breathhold. If you want to work on static breath hold. You should always have a spotter. Unless your out of the water. And you should always make it your last part of your practice session and not the first.
