I live in mission beach. mainly grew up in Ilo, Peru(very south of peru)
My dad grew up in Hawaii. And he had a lance (or polespear) that he kept from when he was in Hawaii. He took us out when i was young a few times and got some fish to eat, but i never tried it or anything, i was too busy surfing, and the waves rarely dropped below chest to head high, only like 2 weeks a year. So with my frustration of the non waves here in san diego, i had been telling myself i was going to get a spear for a while because of all the stories from my dad, and all love i had for eating fish and for the ocean in general, and i always thought that pole spears were the way to go, because guns are cheating to me. spears are it.
So: me and my brother at mid summer, went down to the diveshop in point loma and got our stuff. Got some good fins and goggles and used our oldschool snorkels from peru (just plain black rubber because i've always been a junkie for the old simple way of doing things).
we got cheap fiberglass spears.
We first started in la jolla (breakers is think or boomer) on that reef to the left(when faceing the water)
We both got some perch the first time out, and it tasted good.
from then on i was completely hooked, its all i could think about.
i went all the time, and i only ate fish like all the time for a few weeks.
I then started to go alone because people were lame and 'didnt feel like it' all the time. i stayed shallow just going for smaller fish (like 10").
then one day i didnt have time to drive up to la jolla, so i decided to go out in front of my house in mission beach. Had my brother whom i live with and a couple friends at the apartment. So i came back with
one 9" corbina
four 14" corbina
one 14" croaker
one 16" croaker
one 18.5" croaker a couple days later, that stuffed me and my girlfriend
And we ate like kings.
i then hit mission beach quite a few times.
figured out the tricks to beach fishing. Trolling right at the point where there is visibilty at the lowest tide at dusk. always works.
its amazing. i am totally hooked on spearfishing.
i never intend to move to a gun.
and i never intend to quit.
but i hope to improve. a lot.
the water has just gotten REALLY cold within the past 2 weeks, and now when i try to go on the beach with a wetsuit mid-day, fish see you from a mile away and bolt. maybe they assume im a seal or something with the black suit. there is no cover at all. no rocks, kelp, nothing.
maybe the next suit i get will be blue or gray. black, blue, gray, and white, are the only colors i can possibly find because i dont have money to throw around on wet suits that are not made for surfing.
and ill just keep it in the reefs so i have some cover, always like it there better anyways.
i had those fins that strap in on the back (seadart brand i think) and where the strap actually bolts onto the fin, broke off.
So im looking for a good set of fins, i dont want huge ones though. and those ones with the strap sucked anyways, the always slide down and theres no support, i dislike them.
Also my snorkel was accidentally taken. (if you havent guessed i got mauled by a sneaker set wave). so i tried one of the newer types and i hate it. does anyone know of an oldschool style snorkel, just tough black rubber? dry snorkels are lame too.
And im buying the headhunter killer bee. the stinger tip and the normal, and the paralizer.
I dont intent to really go for massive fish because im just one guy, im not a commercial fisherman needing massive amounts of fish meat to sell. and i dont have a million friends to give fish to. I just want to feed me and a few friends every once in a while. so smaller sized to some good medium sized fish is what i want. Nothing like the size of my own body or anything. so i think the killer bee will be perfect. really fast and light and delivers the tip.
This winter i am going back to Peru with my brother to visit our family (who now live in central/northern Peru (Huaraz) in the Andes. 2.5 hours down the mountains is the best secluded empty beach ever. point break on some rocks (even behind the rocks if you want to get knarly) then breaks over a sand bottom across a mini bay. Waves are so long that on occasion you pull out of the wave just because it was so long that your legs start to collapse and you can not physically continue. then make a walk all the way back to the point, walk into the water between some rocks, wait for a little lull, and make your 1 to 2 minute paddle back to the point. Its like a swimming pool with a perfect wave in it, many times tubing, so easy its not even funny. And everything is calm, when afternoon wind comes it pushes right offshore. never onshore. (and its totally blocked from the wind, so any wind is very minimal)
and right out the back of the peak, a long coast of rock reef, with pretty warm clear water.
theres no paver road to it, its like a 15 minute bumpy dirt road, only ever seen 4 other people out. and a few tents from people camping, nearest town 20 minutes away. not really any surfers live there, its just a tiny little town.
so this winter (summer down there) we are going to camp there for a week straight
so surfing perfect waves eating camp fire fish caught with our spears.
well, hope you guys enjoyed my book. anyone crazy enough to read the whole thing.
just sharing my story of excitement over finding something new that i will continue till i am too old to pull the rubber band up the lance.
