Its MASSIVE diameter...it is supposed to be very heavy duty for shooting grouper, or pelagics. If you are shooting smaller fish, save your money

there is a video on youtube of him using it, and it is a tank.

not to mention he is amazing at it, every shot in the face. or very close

They are great pole spears and very strong. If you are shooting large or strong fish there is one weakness. The shaft at the front of the pole spear tends to bend on large or strong fish if they fight or move laterally very fast. The makers are aware of this because it happens a lot to the guys using them in the Bahamas. The shaft is designed to screw in and out so your can replace the bent shaft. Have a spare or two.

If you like this style of polespear, but want to save some money the Ray odor is similar. It is 5/8" solid aluminum and has a Tahitian shaft . You can order a 4th section if you want it extra long. The ray odors are pretty stout. I would put a longer band on it that stretches farther up the spear.

I also have a linghunt that I really like. It is 5/8 hollow, thick walled aluminum. It can be ordered with a Tahitian shaft. It is not as stout, but a little faster since it is slightly lighter.

This question is slightly off-topic for the Manny Puig but does anyone have an experience or knowledge of the Henley pole spear? Just curious.

OceanEd

The Henley is another great pole spear. It is the only pole spear out there that has as large a diameter as the Manny Puig. The Henley does not have the long shaft sticking out of the front of the pole and therefor does not have the occasional problem with the shaft bending. The Henley is also a bit more modular with a few extre pieces you can add or subtract to change the length.

Both are great pole spears.

if you are shooting mangos and smaller stuff, get a light spear. stay away from the puigs, henleys, etc. they are too slow and hard to swing. they are great for large fish, which are close. i use a sea stinger for the snapper and stuff.

Check out this Crist spear as well:

I've got one and I love it. Hit's fish like a mack truck and it's pretty maneuverable in the water too. Flopper tips are the way to go, way better than the paralyzer, imo.

Hardway:

I now have one of the Crist pole spears and I am extremely impressed with it. There is no question in my mind that it is right up there with the Henley and the Puig pole spears. In fact, I am taking it to the Bahamas with me as my main pole spear for blue water hunting. I even had Aaron sell me an additional 4 foot section so I can make it extremely long for trying to get close to wahoo.

Hiya lads, nice to see part of Spearboard devoted to the 'real thing', at last.

I really enjoy my Manny Puig spear. It seems pretty ideal for the diving I do, mainly trargetting our local snappers of 5 - 20 pounds. I do love my hybrid 3 prong too, but it's a bit irresponsible on fish over 10 pounds.

One thing with my manny Puig spear - it EATS gloves beause of the knurled grip. A pair of standard dive gloves last one or two days at best before wearing through. I've now put some grip tape over the knurling and it seems to have solved the problem.

Snpper:

I agree about the problem with knurled grips. I also cover them with tape to save my gloves. I also use Kevlar gloves because they last longer.

Are you spearing around Aukland or up north around the Bay of Islands?

Cool! I met Aaron at the Randy Fry Memorial Tournament here in NorCal and he told me he sent one to you. I'm looking forward to some shooting reports!
I travel to Florida once or twice a year, maybe I could go hunting with you sometime.

snpper: welcome to our little part of the spearboard! there's just something special about stabbing a fish with a big spear, isn't there?

Hi Hardway. thanks for the welcome.

OceanEd, I dive anywhere from Tairua and Whitianga in the coromandel, all around Auckland (which can actually be really good in close locally in summer), Whangarei, anywhere in the Hauraki Gulf, Bay of Islands, and and up to Whangaroa area (Far North). It's all within a 3 hour drive and I have been doing quite a bit of kayak diving which I am enjoying more and more, as per pix on my website.

I was down in Aukland and the areas you describe several times. I loved the diving and the hunting. It reminded me of where I grew up in Southern California. You guys have the largest lobster in the word running around down there. Why don't you post some pictures of some of those monsters sometime?? Don't you call them Pack Horses or Packies?

It doesn't get any more beautiful than the Bay of Islands and the Coramandle Penninsula. I almost immigrated. Sometimes I still think I made the wrong decision when I decided not to.

Yeah, it's a pretty good place to live most of the time, and I reckon the spearing is as good as anywhere, having done a bit of travelling myself. I used to dive the Bay of islands every second weekend, and I love the area.

The odd packhorse cray gets taken as big as 20 pounds or so. They can be so big they don't live in holes, they just crash around in the kelp! I haven't seen any big ones, though. Our normal red crays are more common and like those in California, but maybe smaller on average? I take a few when I can be bothered, but don't go out of my way to get them.

Next time you're in town, you'll have to look me up.

SNPPER:

I was down there in the mid 70's and there were packhorses around. I still have a picture somewhere of laying one on top of an aluminum 80 tank and it was as long as the tank. I never saw one in a hole, they were all walking around in the kelp.

If I ever do get down there again, I will bring my pole spears and we can go out.

Aaron, Stephan thanks for the kind words about my pole spears. I hope they're working well for you.

Welcome to the board SnpperWhisperer.

I enjoyed cruising around your website. It's a well put together and the best part it's all polespear.
The polespears I build are knurled because some users prefer this. I'm not to keen on it myself. The reason being is they chew up bare hands, gloves and rubbers.
I wrap them with self-sealing tape (amalgamating tape) this has worked for me for years and I'll never go back to any type of adhesive tape.
If you use amalgamating tape some gloves will feel very slick and it will be hard to grip the spear while hunting.

Thanks, AZSpearo. Your spears look great also. It seems there are some very good options in heavy duty pole spears. Aaaahhh so many spears to choose from... so little time... I'd like to try them all!

As you say, I have found that since taping up my MP spear, my old gloves don't grip as quite as well as they perhaps could. (I had coated my gloves heavily with thick Aquaseal and sand as a last resort for the knurling previously). So, I will buy some more gloves and use them 'au naturale', which works just fine with my 3-prong. This, combined with a good tape job, should hopefully resolve my problem and I will be a happy little spearo. I am using the tape they use on the hybrid 3-prongs in Hawaii, which I expect is the same as the Amalgamating tape you refer to.

OceanEd: those big boys are fairly rare now, and most people now would leave them to spawn since they have a demonstratable capacity for survival and they spawn much more than small ones. We are in the process of protecting a large habitat where they are still commonly found as a massive total no-take reserve, which should see them increase in numbers again.
