Well I was not able to join some of my buddies for an early day of diving becuase of stupid work. But I got to join some buddies that were diving some numbers of jupiter in the afternoon. The seas as most of you know were nice really good vis IMO even with the lack of sunshine. We dropped in about 80' got about 4 bugs in the boat and a couple of groupers. In my second drop I managed to take a really long shot at this guy. He saw me coming and he knew I ment business. I shot and thank God that the spear stuck. Hopefully seas will stay like this for while and it does seem that the groupers are moving in.

Nice fish but I think some got the ID wrong. I believe that is a Yellowfin Grouper (Mycteroperca venenosa). Some of them are bright red when they get big. Some refer to those as "firebacks". Anyhow congrats on your catch...it's a real 'beaut.

I was thinking yellowmouth, but after looking at the pic again, I do believe you got it right. Regardless of the subspecies, it's still a nice fish!

Patrick I think it looks like a dark version of your fish in the above picture.

Although this black of mine def has the yellow in the corner of the mouth...but the fins on the grouper he is holding up look different. Where are the marine biologists when you need them??:D

Patrick, that fish KiteSpearo shot in post #1 is a black grouper in my opinion. Emil, I have been through this issue big time, but you may be right. I believe the yellow on the mouth throws people off. I had DNA analysis done by ichthiologist Dr. Ray Waldner on a nice one I shot with lots of yellow in the mouth and it was confirmed to be a black. He was doing an eletropheresis study and compared 6 different grouper species. The yellow fins have yellow fins. I cannot see clearly yellow on those fins. Maybe Kitespearo has a better photo of the fins. Patrick and Emil, look at one of Headhunter's yellowfins here at this link:

That's my 2 cents and I'm stickin to it unless proven wrong dude, Tony

Jimbo, mine was off Jupiter in 130 feet.

Here is an 80 pounder on my dock shot by a good friend of mine named Kevin Eaves got in the same Jupiter area. ;)

Note the pectoral fins which are more like a traditional black.

Tony. You are right it must have been a black. Sadly I do not have another picture of it BUT the pectoral fins did not have any yellow at all. the only thing that had yellow was the side of the mouth and also some pigmentation around the face. That all the yellow it had.
Thanks for the info Tony.

Since I can not see the original picture....or several other pictures throughout the forum....I can not point out what I saw but I will describe it. It seemed to me that the dorsal fin had a fair amount of yellow on it as well as the mouth corners. I also saw a patch near the collar of the fish where the original colors seemed preserved because of ice contact. That patch seemed to resemble the pattern and coloration of a fireback. I understand the yellow mouth corners are not proof positive indication that a grouper is a yellowfin as blacks (specially large ones) often have a fair amount of yellow in the corners. Whatever it was it is a nice fish but I stand by my original assessment of the species. I may well be wrong (as I have been several times before) but for a black any amount of yellow color on the dorsal would not fit with any i have ever seen before.
