I'm in the market for a new polespear. Last weekend, after getting tired of loading my rabitech 120 all day, I decided to see what I could do with the old 3-prong. Long story short, it got bent to hell :(. I'm looking to get a Gat-ku but I'm confused as to what length to get. I'll be freediving in 10-60 feet and hunting anywhere from the upper keys to Ft. Lauderdale.
What length do you all recommend?
Thanks-

I have both length Gat Ku pole spears. I dive from Melbourne down to West Palm. I much prefer the longer pole spear. I have always preferred a longer pole for a number of reasons, and I think you will love using it. If you feel you need or want more power, replace the band with black, 1/2" tubing that is thick walled and make the overall length longer. The three prong that comes with the pole spear sticks like epoxy once it hits a fish.

theres i think 4 or 5 lengths now. i have the 9' with the paralyzer, and its awesome. its got plenty of reach, and is still manageable in the kelp. i dont know if theres kelp in fl, but i think 10' would be too long for what i do. email dustin and he can get you hooked up. id say youre making a smart choice with whatever length you choose. theyre bitchin.

Good choice with GatKu. I have an 8' that's great, but since you have much better vis than so-cal, I'd follow OceanEd's advice for a 9-10 footer. Consider getting the slip tip too.

I'm planning on buying a Gat-ku soon, mainly for shore diving in southern california for mainly bass, sheepshead and halibut. Checking out the lengths and trying to decide which one to get. I'm thinking I'll be fine with an 8 footer. Any So Cali divers have any suggestions? Oh yea, slip tip or paralyzer?

I have a 9' GatKu. Overall I have been extremely happy with the performance. I replaced the band material with some of the stuff from Hana Pa and it works much better. I also recommend the slip tip for everything but rockfish and octopus.

Are you normally hunting the rocks or out in the kelp? I ask because I'm going to be buying one next week. I have a 6ft Trident Traveling polespear right now, and want to upgrade. I'm normally hunting in the reef areas in about 10-15 ft of water, and am wondering what size to get.
Thanks, Ward

haha sorry Isla Vista I don't think i'll be selling it for a long time, the thing is a cannon.
Also, I bought a 8 foot detachable head Gat-ku and I love it. Both tips work pretty good, but if you are going to be shooting some bigger fish i'd go with the slip tip.

I discovered while hunting up in Malibu last Sunday that a 9' polespear is wayy too big for hunting caves. I spent about an hour making dives on this holed up big calco and finally hit it and had it rip off.
Id say 7' is the most versatile length.

Actually...the home page for Gat-Ku doesn't seem to work, but a little end around will get you where you need to go:

Do yourself a New Year's favor. Check out the Ray Odor 5/8" solid annodized Aluminum
Pole Spear at http://www.spearfishing.cc/Pole%20Spears.htm
It comes in 3, 2ft lengths, and can be used as a 4ft,6ft, or order x-tra sections and make it as long as you like. It's a killer.
