I have been there 3 times never to spear but the diving wasn't too good due to the fact they ruined the reefs with dynamite. they used to blow up and sell the coral, dumb move really. Jamaica is a kick ass place to vacation if you like adventure. I plan to go there this year myself.
pm me if you wan't to know any on-island must see spots and things to check out I did 2 - 2week vacations there one in montego bay one in ocho rios and one was a cruise ship stop for one day.

I did about 4 or 5 dives while I was there. Not a good place for spearing. The locals are poor and the fish the heck out of the place. On one dive that was particularely void of fish, there was this tall net that stretched out of sight in both directions. They have to feed their families today and don't care about the dive industries dollars coming in the future.

The locals have indeed devastated the fish population down there, out of need and ignorance.

I stayed at the half moon in rose hall it has 2 1/2 miles of private beach. I freedived almost everyday with my gun and didn't shoot it once. The reef is way over fished to say the least. Four or five guys a day would walk out on the reef every morn and do about a five mile drift only killing small fish and collecting small lobsters. There are a few lobsters i found about 10 to 13 a day but they were all so small i left them to grow. They only fish that i found with any size were hiding along the resort walls and what not in shallow water i was basically crawling around in the rocks with my mask on. A few non windy days i took a long swim out to where guys were trolling in about 80 foot of water. And dove for a few hours lots of schools of ballyhoo but nothing eating. all and all it was a good workout but would never go on a spearfishing trip

my taxi driver told me there are no wild animals at all on the island, he said you will never see a snake, a turtle, a rabit, nothing, they ate it all!! I imagine the reefs are similar. I will not go back, too many much nicer islands to visit.
