Im kinda new to using a polespear, but if you get rocked up by a grouper do you all use float lines or do you juss drop ur spear and get a breath?

Using float line can be a, annoying and b. dangerous if you get caught up in it on a long dive.
What kind of polespear are you using? and tip? I recommend a paralyzer or slip tip on it, get that in the head of the grouper( better for the taste of the meat) drive it in to the head the whole way. If you need air drop it and come back for your spear and fish.
so anyway I do not use a float line.
please post some pictures!

Slip tips are the way to go, in my opinion, but remember that if you use a slip tip, the fish will be able to swim away much easier than if you have a regular tip because the polespear will follow the fish instead of the fish having to swim with the spear staying rigid. If that makes sense. With that being said, If I were to hunt large fish in deep on murky water with a slip tip, I would attach a float to the band. Just place the floatline connection on the band where in crosses your hand so it does not cause drag on your spear when you shoot at a fish.

I almost always use a float line because there is every chance of me shooting a yellowtail which can pull me under. Also, the snapper I hunt grow to over 20 pounds and can be hard to fight - or sometimes you need to fight them gently - and if they swim off with your spear they will be lost on the dirty water I usually dive in. Also, there are the added advantages of float visibility to avoid boat versus diver incidents, I can tow a dive flag, and I can store my fish on the float away from me for the bronze whalers that lurk here this time of year. But obviously not all these reasons will be appropriate in some other places.
As Calla969 says, clip it near your grip - or even better, tie a loop in your rubber big enough for your hand (like Manny Puig spears do), and clip it on in there behind your hand. I use a standard shark clip on a short length of poly line (same as most euro guns have), and clip this to a fish stringer attached to the diver end of my float line.
