Hello all, I am new to free diving, and new to spearfishing. I am in Reedsport and am looking for some fairly local divers to either dive with or at least get some tips from.
If any one has some tips or info on spearfishing spots between Bandon and Florance I would appreciate the help. Thanks.

Sorry this took so long for you to recieve a response about hunting in Oregon. I have met some great Oregon spearo's, but they surely don't comunicate often on the board. I am not a local, but I will be moving to Eugene soon and am an experienced freediver/hunter in the Cal. Extreme North Coast (very similar conditions).
I just got back from a trip up the Oregon coast scouting spots from the bluffs as I went along. I have some decent ones picked out.
Are you a free or SCUBA diver?
I'll be moving up in mid Oct. And will certainly be looking to hit up some spots. Looks like the vis is about 4-8ft depending. I know that might sound bad, but I've nailed some beautiful Lings in worse. Hunting will definately be an option if you want. Peace.

4-8 ft. I just went today in hawaii and it was easily 100 ft. vis. If I go diving up there I will definately need to get used to the conditions.

Ha, ha! Yes! It will certainly take some getting used to, cold water, heavy fog, rough and dirty...but the sea has her rewards! You'll acclimate quickly. It's a whole different kind of hunting here. But the offshore on boats should be clearer. There's supposed to be large ling cod in these waters if that helps. Peace.
PS it's perfectly natural to get cold feet here...the trick is staying in the water till they numb up!:thumps:

Are there any decent spearfishing spots near Portland? I just got a call last night from an old friend who wants me to take over his practice in Portland.

Hawaii fish = Easy to find, hard to shoot. North coast fish = Hard to find, easy to shoot.
That's what a spearo from Hawaii told me anyway, and it seems to make sense. :thumps:

Hey tough guys! I will get som information from my Uncle (he still lives there but dives infrequently anymore) And my Dad. He started diving the area in the late 50's early 60's. :cowboy:
I know that the reef around Port Orford is good sometimes. Also we spent a lot of time a little further south at a park called "Lone ranch" I believe. I remember very large rock fish coming out of those places. As for North of Bandon, I don't know. Maybe the breakwaters and any reef you can find. It seems there is a lot of sand.
I know the surfers are harrassed by the man in the grey suit around Newport...fwiw:(
more to follow...

I am in the Portland area. Been keeping my eyes open for some dive buddies. I spent the last 4 years diving in San Diego, haven't done much up here, but I grew up in Nor Cal so I am pretty comfortable with the conditions. Work a lot, but sure would like to scope some spots if people are going out. Good luck and stay safe.

Looks like I'm going to be in Portland for that job interview in early March. Anyone have any suggestions for potential shore dive sites I can check out while I drive my family to Newport?

I'm going to be at OHSU in Portland for the next 3 years starting in late June for a residency program, but if I get some time to dive, I'd like some company and guidance. Anyone ever dive offshore for albacore? I hear they get some good runs up there.

Small world. Tyson, I just got back from a job interview in Portland, and there's a 50/50 chance I'll be moving up there before the end of the year. I didn't have much time to check out the coast, but my family and I did drive to Lincoln City and looked at the beach. I quickly realized that I'd be frickin' INSANE to try a shoredive there.:(

Howard, if you decide to make the move, we'll definitely have to buddy up when I get some breaks from my intense schedule.

I'll be back in the Portland area this summer from May to July. I just have one online class and plan to play the rest of the time.
I picked up Spearfishing in the virgin islands this year while living here with my wife. I'd say I'm intermediate to advanced, but it shallow hear so my depths are more in the less-than-50 range. I'd like to do some 100 foot stuff though!
I'll be up for heading to the water pretty much any day of the week. I have a white water raft if anyone is interested along with some climbing gear for a couple people. I also have access to a a small aluminum boat, camper, and jetski if we want to tow a jetski around for long distances or places with current.
I have only done rod and real in Oregon, so I'm interested in spearing once I get back and learning the environment. I have a dry suit and will probably use that. I'm up for learning anything, training, etc or helping beginners learn how to rig a gun, make bands, or just hang out and drink a beer. PM me for my email so I don't have to post it here where spammers can see it.
cheers

I just moved back to Oregon From a year and a half dive vacation in Florida:lol:
I grew up surfing around Newport/Otter Rock, and my father has been diving the coast since the 60's (not the past 10-20 years though...he discovered Hawaii and mexico). I am a very competent diver, but have not spent much time scuba/freediving here.
I'm looking to do some spearing on the coast here. Just hit me up if you're interested in going out, I've got a few spots.

I'll be moving back to Washington in a year from Alabama. I want to meet some spear fishing guys in the NW to hunt with when I do.
Going spear fishing out of panama city in two weeks. The Gulf is a blast and will probaby try to come down annually to shoot fish when I move back.
