No problem. We'll see if it catches on when the water warms up. Would be interesting to hear from you guys and read regional reports from that area.

Vin Hey Vin. Welcome to Spearboard, and tell us about your trips when you guys start getting back out up there. Boston is great. Used to make the 75 minute trip from Concord, NH when I lived up in those parts.

I dive all year- been off Nahant + Rockport most recently. Mostly after bugs + scollops. But the most fun is off the Elizabeth Islands- there are handfulls of spots + you can shoot stripers in RI. I think?? Anyway. Good shore diving in Little Compton. Sakonett River. I am always up for a good trip!

I was wondering, where do you look for lobster? Do you have to go at night, or can you get them in the day. Where do you find them, and how do you catch them? I live in sothern california, and dive for bugs here, I have dove New England(RI), and could never find them. The bottom is so different.

In RI most divers go at night when the bugs are out of their hiding spots and looking for food. They are pretty easy to take whenthey are on the move.
In ME and NH it is illegal to dive for lobsters.
In MA diving for lobsters at night is prohibited. You need to find them in their holes and take them out. (Yes, they fight back!), Wear the thickest gloves you can find. Look under rocks and in crevices.

Vin, were do you off the Elizabeth Islands? I mainly dive in Plymouth, Sanwich, and Newport.

RI is more lieniant on spearfishhing than Ma. But ... There are several hot spots up and down the coast - in the winter they migrate out into deeper water to eat. but you can still find bugs in 30-40 feet this time of year. Rockport is Hot. I had a tickle stick- a long plexiglass pole to help drive them out - but speed with your hands is key- I also have a collapsable pole spear and I take half+ duct tape the threads- it works fine.

Off Quick's hole on the Vinyard sound side- there are sever hot spots- again stripers we can't shoot......

I have a house in wesport- and need to spend more time diving around newport- whats good ??

Boot,
They usually get you in some manner. They do the most damage when they get your fingers.

Hey Vin,

I have a few friends in westport, I know that place very well. Did you grow up there? Great place! The bayside restaurant has killer seafood(+nice people). The water gets real dirty and polluted over there cause of that river so I have been told-Cow crap and stuff. Lots of cows in westport-never seen so many. I heard Newport was the place to find fish and cleaner water. Big bass and blackfish off those mansions on that cliff.

No - Grew up in Boston. Parents bought a place in Wstprt when I was 4. Been lucky to play down there. - No thewater isn't dirty bcs of the cows..... ridiculouse. There are two tidal rivers that run into westport harbor. Clearly, the furthur you are up stream - the water looks like a dark pond. But off in the Bay- relative to ocean surg and wind direction. Your right, RI has some deeper water right off shore- its a double edge sword - deep can mean rough - but there is movment which blowes it out. RI has a great rocky coast line. Great fishing.

Let me know if your up here we'll head out. Who do you know up here? I am 31 married - my wife dives too- but preferes warm water- you know the drill....

How is the fishing up in Onset?

clavinr
01-22-2004, 01:47 PM
Not bad. I usualy go to Scussett Beach or Sandwich Beach near the entrance to the canal. That's a short drive. Sometimes I fish from a sit on top from Onset into Buzzards Bay/Monument Beach. Mostly Tautog, not a single flounder last season.

For lobsters I head to Manomet or Duxbury/Marshfield.

Ever get any big 'white chinners' up around Cape Cod? Do you ever get lobster during the day or at night?

clavinr
01-24-2004, 05:09 PM
Yep. We call them white heads. The more mature tautog turn white around the mouth and chin? (do fish have chins?) With the visibility we have around here, sometimes that's what we see first, is that white. that usually means a 9 or 10 pound fish.

Whatkind of fish doyou mainly spear?

I've just been making some floatlines and getting in shape for the spring. I had a hellof a time with one. Alot cheaper than buying them and it gives me a project for the winter.

holymackerel

I have shot halibut, and sheephead(like your blackfish) This spring, I plan on going(trying) to shoot yellowtail, and white seabass. Oh, and bug hunting is a ton of fun. Do you need floatline for tautog? I would think you could just use a shooting line attached to the gun, do they pull that hard?

clavinr
01-26-2004, 08:26 AM
Nah, the're small. I just made a nice floatline cheap money. I use it mainly because if I drop the seargun in current, or one holes up and I need air...for the striped bass, different story.

Do your lobsters have claws?

Vin: I have two JBL s 38 special and 63 both wood. Naturaully I would like riffe, but child support... I think your 53 is perfect, I wish I had gone with that...

PS how big are the yellowtails? They must kick good!

holymackerel
01-26-2004, 07:12 PM
No, our lobster have no claws, They are like big prawns, I think there is a toss up between the taste of a new england lobster, and a california lobster. I have had a lot of both, and I could not tell you which one is better. As far as yellow tail they are just like bluefish..without the teeth. they are almost identical in shape, and they are very strong fighters. Although I think yellows are easier to shoot then blue fish. They tend to be a curious fish.
