View Full Version : What tip should i use?
Hi everyone i was wondering if i could get some advice on what tip of tip i should be using on my polespear. I am in Monterey and am mostly going after rockfish and greenlings. I am planning on trying to go after lingcod once the season opens up and i start making trips up north for abs. I am currently using a 5 ft polespear with a paralyzer tip. I am considering buying a sliptip but i heard that a tahtian(sp?) flopper might be better. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Ned,
Sometimes its hard to tell which forum to post in, but in this case, you might be better off asking your question in the CA forum simply because that is where you will find the guys hunting those fish in those places.
Welcome to the board. I think you will find that there are a lot of guys from Nor Cal who will be a great help.
Thanks i will repost it there thanks for the advice

Are you having bad luck with the paralyzer? It may just be a technique or experience thing. However, I prefer single flopper tips - growing up we would always shoot inshore fish with a paralyzer tip and every now and then, a body shot would lead to an escape. The flopper is a great way to get good penetration on those not-so-perfect shots and prevent a fish from thrashing off. If you are hunting fish that are actively swimming around, that would be my choice. For lings and other fish that use cover and hide, the paralyzer is great for those high percentage head shots. Slip-tips and rocks don't mix well at all.
Oh and Bill, the polespear section is the perfect place to put this thread - It's not Nick's fault that you CA boneheads can't venture out of your own regional section... :D

as far as rock fish go, i started my career with a double flopper rock point. damn things are bulletproof. you dont get much extra reach out of them, but youre not losing any fish, thats for sure..
Kjflyfish thanks for the advice i was considering buying a new tip because i have heard people complain that they lose more fish especially fish over 10 #s with a paralyzer with fish wiggling free but most of that is probably from people not using it correctly. Right now in Monterey the vis isnt that great and on thursday i didnt even see a fish in the water so i havent had much of a chance to test it out. But if the paralyzer is good for in the rocks then i will probably just stick with that and maybe get a sliptip for the bigger fish.

I don't use a polespear, but Seahunter is a very accomplished NorCal hunter and has used various polespears very successfully. Might shoot him a PM.

If you like polespearing and intend to stick with it, dump the wet noodle and get a decent spear, that's the best advice I can give. As for tips, I like to use either a single flopper on a shaft, or a threaded shaft with a double flopper rock tip screwed on. Hunting up here in norcal, I use the screw on tips because my spear (Crist Spears) blows right through most fish and winds up hitting the rocks behind it, more often than not. This take a major toll on my tips, so it's nice to have one I can easily and cheaply replace.
You can take larger fish with a paralyzer, but you'll almost certainly have a higher percentage of tear-offs. The flopper shafts will retain the fish even if you miss the sweet spot.

Get a sea stinger. It is a slip-tip and it won't open up a huge wound in your fish like a flopper will. You can google sea stinger, I am not sure if any dealers in Cal will have them, since they are mostly a Florida thing.
