Had a regulation question I was hoping some of you guys could answer. I understand it is illegal to carry a speargun while diving or freediving for lobsters in the great state of CA. Would it be legal to hunt for fish with your gun for a while, stow it in the boat,(or kayak) and then grab a few bugs? I would hate to carry out the above procedure, and then arive at the beach with a speargun stowed in the boat(kayak) and get a citation. I know that it is illegal to have abalone and scuba gear in the same vessel, was wondering if the same procedure appliead to lobster and spearguns. I wouldnt think it would be a problem, as long as the bugs didnt have holes in em.

It is not illegal to take a gun with you when your bug'n. You just can't use the gun for retrieving bugs from holes. I take my gun with me all the time incase I come across a monster ling while looking in holes. I've never been cited. Questioned, yes. Cited, no.
Sometime the warden will look at my bugs for any wierd looking marks on there body. Just don't be cocky about anything and you'll be fine. Take care..
