How much led should I be using to keep me down with a 5 mill suite. I am 175 pounds

guess about 20 Lb would be sufficient, but you have to experiment. Go to pool, check the weight, then add 4Lb for Saltwater.

In shallow waters you need to add more weights so you be able stay down.

If you are diving 40 plus feet, you want less weight. Once at that depth your density increases because the air in your lungs is decreasing in volume due to compression. If you are overweighted, it gets to be very difficult to get back to the surface. I would say 14-18 lbs as a starting point for deeper freediving. More if diving shallow.
For scuba, you want enough weight to make you negative at the surface. Last thing you want is to get to a safety or deco stop and pop up to the surface due to insufficient weight. Remember that alluminum tanks float when empty.
