Mate, just join in regular spearfishing competitions. The effective handicap of a pole will depend on where you dive and the target species (ie, pelagics are harder but not by any means impossible), but guns are not THAT big an advantage.

Notanx:

Please let me know ASAP about the contest.

Anyone interested in just chartering a boat from JDC or the Randy and the Emerald and going out for an all day, pole spear only good time? (East coast central Florida).

Snpper:

In Central East Coast Florida the fish are pretty heavily hunted and the ones that are left are wary. I am just finishing modifying my Aaron Christ pole spear to 13 feet with a slip tip and reel so I can try to negate some of that disadvantage.

Sounds like hard work. I'd just move somewhere better ;)

BTW, I have just received a spear from Aaron. I am yet to try it out, but will of course post pictures of dead fish when I get some with it!

GAT-KU will have the third annual benifit polespear-only meet here in SD this summer. Keep an eye out in the CA section for more details. Date has not yet been released.

Snpper:

I have already taken your advice. I spend 4 months a year on my boat in the out islands of the Bahamas. Fish are not as skittish.

Rifreediver:
I have thought about shooting the SBO this year with only a pole spear just to see what would happen.

NO TANX and/ or Ocean Ed, I am in Miami. I would be very interested in trying the pole spear contest this summer. When the contest comes around if someone needs another freediver I would be happy to pay my share of the cost etc... I also have a 2004 23' seacraft I can take to palm beach. I just do not know the waters up there at all. Keep me in mind for the contest.
Thanks A.S. Alvarez

Most of the tournaments in California have a polespear division. Gat-Ku and Charlie Sturgill are polespear only events in the So-Cal area.

RIFREEDIVER:

I agree with you. It really would be a hoot to place well in the contest with a pole spear.

Above And Below Ext Ocean sportd is hosting a Bimini rules tournament this summer, pole spears and slings (no trigers of any kind) freedive only. Everyone was really happy with our grand opening tournament, I well post as we put more togther.

That sounds good, but how are you going to tell that someone used a polespear? Are you going to polygraph the winners?

Sounds like alot of fun, Hopefully I will do better than last tournament.

Most of the tournaments in California have a polespear division. Gat-Ku and Charlie Sturgill are polespear only events in the So-Cal area.

There's also the Larry Staat meet in December. Sturgill is usually late September-early October and both are Fathomiers meets.
