I live in manasquan and have an offshore/canyon boat. Anyone crazy enough to try some offshore hunting this year?
I'm dying to try it but too chicken to do it alone and my fishing crew refuses to get in the water.
Oh, and are there any shops in jersey that have quality hunting equipment other than the LBL/Biller stuff?
Looking forward to meeting some of you.

I'm so down! I have a buddy who would be into it too. Just let me know ahead of time so I can gear up for something like that. I'll send you a PM when the season gets closer. I don't know of any shops around here that carry too much in the way of spearfishing. Mostly just a few of the cheaper guns.

The only real shop on the east coast is Florida Freedivers. Either go to FL or order from there page. Lets chum the Hudson and get in the slick. Sept. sounds right.

I've got the gear and some experience, I need a few to jump in with me. My fishing crew won't have anything to do with getting wet,
I would think an inshore trip shooting some mahi on the pots to work out the gear and get used to each other would be a first step, safety protocols etc.
Then a trip to the edge.
We got some big Hoos out there too.

Do U See Mahi Inshore

SlipTip2
04-06-2008, 08:38 AM
Yes there are mahi in the mudhole when the temps are right. They can be right on the beach if the conditions are right, but usually are within 20 miles. We get some nice ones offshore up to 40lbs and there can be some hogs on the 20 pots. it would be worth the trip.

Barnegat Ridge is a great place to think about for mid summer mahi and you might stick a school Bluefin tuna there too. Just make sure you have a tuna permit. Ollies lump is another good spot and both are reachable with good ocean conditions with small boats.

How Far Is Barn Ridge From Shore What is The Depth I Scuba But All My Buddys Freedive

Probably about 15 miles from barnegat, I'm not sure as my home inlet is Manasquan. If memory serves me, the depths are from 65-120. The bluefin and the mahi will be in the upper third of the water column. There are quite a few pots out there too and the occasional mako.

Have you ever done any bluewater diving? its a totally different ballgame out there than close to the beach! and its a good idea to have other people that are experienced with you that know whats going on too! the group of guys i bluewater dive with all have atleast 5yrs of experience and we have all worked as comm or sportfishing capts too so we have a good idea on whats going on out there! Im not sure of your experience level but it would be a good idea to go with someone who does have experience out there.

Waterman makes a good point, but everyone's gotta learn sometime. As to the offshore experience, I have over 30 years out there on a regular basis on two oceans. Blue water fishing can get you hurt real quick too.
As to the blue water hunting experience, I've only ever hunted in Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Hatteras, and a few Carrib islands.
So I'm no pro, but not exactly a novice either.
As to hunting experience, I have shot most of the North american game species including some danderous ones. Although bluewater hunting does inherently have its own dangers, they are no greater than say high country horseback hunting, Wilderness hunting, hunting Grizzly, Mountain Lion etc.
All of these sports involve sharp, dangerous stuff, weather, injury, entanglement, risk, etc, but can be managed through practice, experience and a mature approach to the sport, ie, learning when to cut your losses, guns etc. rather than macho yourself into a dead man.
Spearfishing is no more, or less, dangerous than any other blood sport.
I suspect we can sort things out in a safe manner, but maybe we should ask Waterman, or others, to join us. I'm always willing to learn a few new tricks.

Excellent points everyone. Sorry for your loss JJ131. I thank you for sharing something so personal to show us the importance of safety and how that in spite of the best preparations tragedies can still happen.

I initially responded to the thread very enthusiastically and quickly. However, I’m well aware that there is a high degree of inherent danger, training, and learning involved in attempting to spear the blue. I’ve been thinking about this for some time now and successfully spearing a variety of these pelagic fish has become a personal goal of mine. I would be honored if the experienced people on this board would help me attain that goal. I’m willing to put in the work necessary to do this in a manner that is as safe as possible for everyone involved. I know it’s a very small group of people that can and will do this. I’m hoping to meet and learn from everyone that I can.

So what I’m saying is if someone experienced like waterman is interested in teaching. I’m very interested in learning.

Does anyone in Jersey have a blue water gun?

bruce_s
04-08-2008, 08:21 PM
I have a 56 inch hybrid that would do barely.I have some experience doing some bluewater in the stream off hatteras.
I am definitely in and have your number sliptip.Check your pm's please.
Good idea to have a plan for an emergency and a med kit and oxygen.
I have been on the ridge when the bite stops and the fish sound and boogie. There are some very large predators out there on occasion.Definitely much different than jetties etc.

I agree with all the points as far as safety and limitations go....I for one, have not been bluewater diving....but as far as boats go...you will be hard pressed to find a Captain as prepared and redundant as myself. I am also a 100 ton master ticket holder as many of you here, so I know all about preparedness...it took me two years to save enough to buy my 6 man raft, 2 EPIRB's, immersion suits, Sat phone, etc...before I even considered buying my gold reels..and I have been running my own boats to the edge for many years. Not to play the who's dick is bigger game, but I for one know the risks..and it doesn't only apply to diving, the 100 square is 118 statute from my slip, so it's never a bargain, especially in the fall. So like I said..I'm game for bouncing around the "inshore" pots to get some dive time...but as far as Hudson etc goes...even when I get a gun capable..it may be quite a while for that.

I Have Been Diving Since 17yrs Old Now I am 31 I Still learn So Much Each time I Go Take Care Good Luck

You don't have to wait awhile just make sure the guys you go with are prepared and have a good idea of whats going on! a good friend of mine killed a mahi before he killed a tog or striper! having a epirb and liferaft are very important but having people that know what to look for is far more important to me

Slip Tip 2, I spend a lot of time in the summer cruising for the tuna. PM me I would like to talk with you and see if we are a fit, as I don't dive with anyone that can't pull my A$% out of a sling when I am diving and that I don't like talking with. If you are serious I can fill you boat with divers that do have offshore experience. Looking forward to hearing form you!
