The forecast for diving doesn't look good. There's supposed to be sizable swell all week and it's going to blow NE for the next few days. Looking at the forecast I'm doubtful that it'll be clear enough anywhere around here next weekend.

that sucks... do you guys scuba or freedive? and where? what type of fish do you shoot? do you go near reefs or structure?

I freedive spear…. Just got scuba certs last year though so I’m hoping to get a little scuba in this year too. There’s plenty of scuba spearfisherman around though so I’m sure you could find some people to dive with both freedive and scuba. Pretty much all our diving here is done on or around structure. All our shore dives are shallow. Jetties, inlets, any rock pile, and there are even some shipwrecks right off the beach that are cool when there not sanded in. If you’re on scuba the Jersey coast has a ridiculous number of shipwrecks and artificial reefs to dive provided you have access to a boat. The fish are just beginning to appear inshore at the moment so there’s not much going on yet except a few of us loonies who want to get out so bad that we’ll go stare at the bottom for winter flounder. Our magic inshore temp is about 50 on the ocean, which usually happens late April to early May. That’s when you’ll start really seeing fish again. Shore diving is going to be tough for you because you’re so far from the beach. You should check out the NY diving too since your so close. Our viz along shore here is hit and run at best. Most of the time it’s a matter of checking it and jumping in when it’s doable and even then it’s not always good the whole day. With the cold water and viz you’ll be missing Florida in no time but hey at least our lobsters taste better.:D Oh and our spear regs follow our hook & line regs. Here’s a good scuba site with a lot of good info on everything Jersey to get you started… dive sites, fish the whole nine. Check it out… http://njscuba.net/index.html Here’s the regs and such http://www.nj.gov/dep/fgw/

Thanks for all the info! Wow i didnt realize the water is still freezing! i have never been in water that is 50.. The coldest is low 60's and I use a 5mil for that.

Five mil is fine if its an apnea suit. The two piece apnea suits with a farmer john are terrific. That leaves your face, hands and feet.I don't know why anyone would want to hit the water before the low fifties.Besides freezin your butt off there are no fish around till that happens.I read somewhere that ideal striper temps range from the mid fifties to mid sixties so there is a way to go yet.
Look for max vis anywhere from six to ten feet most of the time and sometimes a lot less than that.Look for west winds which help a lot. This is definitely not florida but good luck and good weather to you.
