omg my brother in law comes to fl from ark , for his open water dives to complete his certification . first dive, trigger fish comes up to him looks at his mask, he thinks [ this is cool] then it comes around and bites the sh t out of his ear, now the two of them are going around in circles and bites him again, same ear.. ouch/ now noticing the green blood and not knowing what it is.
his instructor comes to the rescue:rofl::rofl: he tell him to surface, trigger joins them to the surface, they didn't stop for the 3 min stop:lol: everyone was concerned but no one could keep a strait face

I'm definitely glad it didn't happen to me...triggers scare the sh*t out of me.

They are viscious I've been attacked once while I was scuba diving, luckily all that I got were holes in my wet suit...I HATE THEM lol

You have to keep an "eye" on those fish not an "ear".

Sorry to hear about your ear
I've heard about that fish
Maybe next time you'll take a gun
and serve him in a dish!

Once upon a time, I seem to recall a certain fellow who got his little finger bitten off by a little fish.:D

Trigger the attack....Ha ha ha..!

That is one of the main reasons why I wear a hood almost 100% of the time. Even on very warm summer days, I usually will wear an $8.00 lycra hood from Divers Direct.

They also like to bite the roll of skin just above the top of mask, expecially if you are working a bug in a hole and have both hands busy.

:lol: now thats funny, seeing as many divers as I do you tend to see one of these "attacks" or bite at least once every few months. Mini season one of those little bastards nipped me twice in the forehead while I was getting bugs out of a hole. Left a nice cookie cutter mark that got plenty of laughs for a few weeks. One diver on my boat didn't know that u were suppose to string them through the gills and out the mouth rather than threw the eyes, so he was bit about 2 inches from his "junk" ... he still gets cracked on today about it

Had one on a stringer and as I was holding the anchor rope on the way up it latched onto my forearm and was shaking its head trying to rip out a chunk! My buddy was laughing like hell till a few weeks later he got bit by one! We learnt the hard way to stringer them thru the mouth but at least it wasn't a ear!:thumps:

Triggers are HIGHLY territorial...ESPECIALLY if they are guarding a nest of eggs. There was a recent article in a dive magazine about them. Apparently they guard a cylinder of water around the nest. Surfacing will not deter them if you remain in the cone. You need to swim away (horizontally) from the column of water. The threat needs to disappear. If you do get one to charge, try to defend open skin areas while swimming away. They will bite through wetsuits, hoods, gloves, even into fins. My personal opinion...if it's a gray or ocean...just pop it. AS for the others, get away from them. I think the article was in Scuba diving magazine...I'll try to find it.

With regards to the ear bites, they can get really nasty and infected easily. Tell him to take care of it really well...an infected trigger bite (from pics from the article) can kill local tissue around the bite and take a few months to heal completely.

I've always been glad that triggers don't get to be 30+ inches and 25+ lbs...then again it would make a heck of a big meal!

I hate them...I get pleasure from poking them and watching them attack each other...a tad vicious but if you have ever been bitten or lost 75% of your fish to a swarm you probably understand...
