Sea Isle, Ocean City, Avalon, Cape May.........looking for hunting partners in south jersey. Plenty of hunting experience on scuba but none free diving. Any takers? Not looking for a babysitter and wont be too much a purdon, I just need people who know the best places to hunt and the little details that come with it. Any takers? Thanks

I'm not asking for secret spots just some dive buddies to to report me missing if I don't surface, just kidding. Seriously I just want to hunt safely with a few people rather then by myself. Any help?..........by the way thinking about buying a new wetsuit specifically for this, thinking the omer black 5mm works, suggestions?

if it fits and keeps you warm than it works...Some will tell you that 5mm will be too much but i'd rather be warm and let water into the suit than be cold and not be able to do anything about it.

I went with the 5mm. Actually found a place online in Florida from a past forum post, Florida FreeDivers, they had Sporasub two piece 5mm for $89.00 clearance. Hopefully its not junk, all posts seemed to be positive with talking about the deal. I have been in contact with SpanishFly, should be hunting shortly in NJ.

Feeman, I'll be spearing the same areas you mentioned. Particularly out of Cape May and Townsends Inlet between Sea Isle and Avalon. I plan to dive the closer artificial reefs such as Ocean City reef and Townsends Inlet reef. I've already found a few guys in this area on this board, same as you are looking. In fact I dove with a couple of them Saturday at the Cape May jetty. What a whopper of a striper one of the guys shot! Have room on the boat for 3 or possibly 4 total. I trailer 50 miles to Cape May (1 hour) or 50 minutes to the ramp between exit 13 on GSP and Avalon (Townsends Inlet). How far do you live from those two points? Shoot me a PM or e-mail.

Tom, I free dive the reefs. Only been on the Ocean City reef but liked the activity I saw on various patch reefs. Want to try the Townsend inlet reef first this season. It's a little closer and only in the 40's to 50 for depth.

ive tried townsed inlet before, its a boat if i remember. i kept watching the water and even when it was clear inshore and offshore there was a murkey 0 vis water about twenty feet down i guess flowing out from the inlet.

I didn't mean a wreck near the inlet, I think I know the one you're refering to, but the TI reef about 4 miles out. Quite a few new wrecks added in addition to a dozen reef-ball patch-reefs. I want to get further out so I don't add to the overfishing on the jetty.

The wreck right outside the inlet is the China Wreck. I've been out fishing the TI reef and on a good day i could see 20ft down easily.

Kyle, do you know how to reach Bill Figley, the director of the reef system? I spoke with Hugh Carberry last summer but he retired. The published phone # seems to have been changed. This past fall NJ was publishing a 3rd edition of the waterproof reef book with numbers. My old copy did not have the Townsend Inlet reef, as it was a 3 year old publication. The 2008 reef news tells of a few added wrecks with numbers, but other than the 4 corner/boundaries, I don't have specific patch-reef numbers. The new book was to be out last Oct. but Jim's tackle in CM hasn't gotten any yet. Does your shop carry them?
JJ131, what size are the suits? Any for 5'-10.5" 160 lbs?
Gene, Saturday May 10th is my wife's pinning ceremony (graduating from long time LPN to RN), so diving is out for me on that day. The day after should be good though. I haven't looked closely but the WX for this weekend may not be perfect. Will you be trying to get out this Sat or Sun?

I'm not sure how to directly get in contact with him. However, i do know a guy that is very active with the construction of the TI reef so i will try to get you the information this weekend. I think i have the coordinates for 3 or 4 of the wrecks in my gps, i'll have to check.

We all need to go out together soon. Also, any interest in going up to LI for the southold striper comp June 14 (http://www.spearboard.com/showthread.php?t=60098&highlight=southold)
I spear out of there once in a while, and its well worth the ride up.

Mr. Hugh Carberry is presently NJ's Artificial Reef Coordinator, and can be reached at (609) 748-2022, during business hours. Mr. Figley is the gentleman who started and ran the program for twenty three years and is now enjoying retirement.

I must have had it backwards, thanks kyle. Like I said, I spoke with Hugh at length last summer but misplaced his number. The 2007 reef newsletter showed a grid with numbers of quite a few symetrically placed "patch reefs" and wrecks for the TI reef. This year's newsletter posted numbers of a few more added wrecks. It's almost like you have to compile the anual newsletters yourself to create an extensive list. I already have more than we could explore over the entire season. I just wanted the complete collection. I'll call Hugh tomorrow for sure.
As far as getting blown out this weekend, I do have an instrument to cut into the helm and wire in the boat. I just hope it's not too bad to work out in the driveway.

JJ, my suits don't fit as well if I gain as little as 10 or so pounds. That's the problem with having a custom suit made when you're at the lightest weight. You have to get back down to that weight in time for the start of the season in order to use it.
Tomorrow's WX looks like a chance of rain around 5pm. Wind doesn't shift from SSW to SE until around 2 pm. Wind supposed to stay single digits til around noon. I might go for it. I'll have to check the tides first.

JJ, I was talking about one of my suits being a custom tailored Elios. I can't gain too much weight and still fit in it comfortably.
Kyle, I can't seem to reach Hugh today, but I went through the past couple years of reef news publications and compiled published numbers for 21 patch reef and wreck locations for the TI reef. Should keep us busy for more than a season. I'm still trying him though.
