I took my new gun out yesterday (a 45" poseidonsub mojo). It is such a beutiful gun I wasn't sure I wanted to get it wet;) But, its beauty was in the water. It is so light and swings effortlessly.
The visibilty was crap (5-6ft), I had only shot a medium sized tog and my diving partner wanted to go in. But, I said give me another half hour. Next dive down, I see 3-4 sized medium schoolies. Then, on the next dive, I hit this guy! Didn't expect to see a striper like this so early. My shot stoned him! The flopper shaft penetrated up to the dog house of the ray odor shaft! This guy was 39" 26 pounds. Here is the first striper killed with my new gun. Couldn't be happier:thumps:

And my dog is ready to eat!

And in the end...

The wife does her part. This nice fillet was only about 1/5 of what I got off the fish. In the middle we got about 2 inch thick cuts. Oh, those are orange peels, yup, gourmet ;)

Wow, way to go! Nice gun too! Thats one hell of a fish for only the second shot with your new gun. Your season certainly kicked off right. You got me going crazy looking at this with the crappy water on us right now.

Yeh, I got this shot literally about 30 minutes before the east wind kicked up to about 12 mph and turned the already bad viz down to 1 ft. So, lets hope things clear up soon!

It was funny, I had just finished handing this fish off to my dive partner when Jim pulled up with his boat. I was really releived that I didn't have to swim back with this guy dragging me down the whole way, I was really exhausted by that point.

Forgot to mention. I noticed the stomach was really full, so I opened it up. I found three 5 inch tog inside! It was really surprising to see them pop out whole like that. I was expecting a small bunker. What are the striper gonna eat in May when the tog season closes?

Smellsfishy, is that you Meir? I think I just put 2+2 together. I had no idea you frequented this board. Didn't recognize the screen name. It's Jim, from ECF. I haven't seen you since our NC trip 2 or 3 years ago. Is all the group still meeting up at Dutch? I haven't been on the board in a few seasons. Been doing offshore scuba 50 miles out for the past few summers but shifting back to freediving more this summer. How've you been?

smellsfishy
04-30-2008, 07:01 AM
Yup It's me, I was actually going to msg you yesterday and never got around to it. I know it's you because you're Avatar looks more like you than mine looks like me .... I hope ;) I'm still doing Dutch although the crowd has changed some. But I've also, been doing some spearfishing in local waters (Far Rockaway, Long Island, etc). I'm actually going to try and head out today to catch the high tide at 10ish if I can get my act together. It's the last day of Tautog season until October for us NYers. Perhaps over the summer I can head down to your neck of the woods and we can do some spearfishing together. Also, we'd love to see you up at Dutch if you're so inclined.

Glad to hear from you again Meir! I didn't make the correlation right away, as you didn't use this screen name on our free dive board. It would be great for you to come down this way and dive. I'm putting a small group together down here to dive the Cape May jetty and a mostly a couple of the artificial reefs off of Sea Isle and Strathmere, NJ beaches (out of Townsends Inlet). They are close by (4-5 miles offshore) and loaded with wrecks, reefballs, army tanks, concrete castings, and FISH! I can fit 3, possibly 4 divers comfortably on my boat, and the fuel split makes for a very inexpensive day on the water. I spoke with Jim Glynn the other week and was trying to coax him into trying the ocean, now that he lives in Jersey. That would be great if we dove together again, like the countless times before! My e-mail has changed from those days, but it should be in my profile. Hope you can make it down without too much of a drive. Figure out what it would take for you to get to exit 13 on the GSP. I launch 2 miles from there when not out of Cape May.
Our tog ends this week too but comes back in mid-July. Will target flounder, striper, etc. in the interim. What did you think of 33fish33's striper? If you dive down here, you'll most likely dive with him too. We dove together the Saturday that he shot the monster. That's a hell of a gun he broke-in that day! What are you shooting with these days?

Jim

I done plenty of scuba haven’t freedove yet in regards with spearfishing. I basically live in the water..it's literaly my job. I didn't bug out. I think you just assumed too much and maybe that’s what makes you come off too heavy in my head. It's all good just read you wrong... but I tend to do that with jersey folk :rolleyes:

That would seem like a good sign, but don't you guys have clearer water more than us down here? Even with these past couple days of NE winds, you still have clear water? I'll take it!
