Didja' ever plan a day on the water when a fast moving front brought Lightning strikes closer than you were comfortable with ?
It happened to me last Summer. I was looking for a particular old House place in about 65" of water. I had been running a grid pattern using my homemade sidescan sonar for about an hour. Focused on the sonar screen and the split screen of the GPS search pattern, I didn't notice the change in Weather untill Lightning struck. Luckily it was on a Island about 3 miles away, but scarey none the less. Catching me by suprise, I immediately wondered just where the next strike may hit, while I retreived the sonar tow fish.
Later I thought about where to get current lightning strike data, in the event of a approaching front.
Most weather stations don't give lightning strike data in real time.
After posting on a amateur radio site I recieved the following link.
http://www.lightningstorm.com/tux/jsp/gpg/lex1/mapdisplay_free.jsp
Anyone using this site ?
Does it give useful data ?
Thanks
