Headed out on Slay Ride 1-17-04. We tried a few new converted loran spots that didnt pan out but found a new spot on our way to some known numbers. Bottom machine lit up like a Christmas tree.
Dive 1 100' deep--vis 25' and COLD
Dropped down and shot a couple nice grouper and a red snapper. Thats when i noticed it! FLOUNDER EVERYWHERE. They were so thick they stacked up on top of each other. My 52 SS commercial turned into a rhino coated gig. Stick, string, repeat sometimes sticking and stringing 2 at a time. Ended up with 19 doormats. Before we went down i asked the captains wife what she wanted me to bring up. She said she wanted flounder and got it. Eyyeball bagged a nice sheepshead and a 5# hog but didn't see any flounder??

Les backdove the spot to retreive the anchor. Windlass ate through the anchor rope as he was pulling it up. He came up with the anchor and a fat female hogfish.

2nd dive 100' I left the flounder alone and shot normal reef fish and bagged a bug for everyone. I saw a piece of coral that "changed color" before my eyes. Took a closer look and noticed it was a octopus. Knowing one of the captains i go with sometimes is Italian and likes octo's I Grabbed and bagged the slimy sucker into the lobster bag. Saw lots of female hogs but the alpha never showed himself. Later found out that eyyeball missed a him. Broke our 20# every trip streak so for once we had to head back to the dock without one of those massive hogs.

Smooth ride home on that 36 Bertram. Got to love it!
Might post pictures later.

:edit date corrected.

Yep, had my first 20#er on and he pulled the spear, no excuses tho, I had the time to load the second band and didn't do it. And on the flounder, I never even looked for them but from now on I will try and remember to LOOK DOWN :p

Nice report. And BTW, that blue thing is a butter holder for serving doormat flounder. :)

And I thought it was for scooping ice out of the fish box, silly me.

Thanks for the info guys!

P.S. Rob, better head for the shelter, it's on now :D
