I was able to drag Julie out for a nightdive on Monday. It was a bit chilly (she complained alot....definately spoiled from all the warm water in the exotic places she travels :) just teasin babe) but the swell was minimal and the viz has finally cleared up. We brought one gun and Julie's underwater video camera in hopes of getting some nighttime action (of fish in the water). We cruised the surfline and only spotted a couple small stingrays and 2 or 3 palmsize halubuts. About 5 minutes into the dive the lights on the vidoe camera crap out. So using a small flashlight Julie helps me scan the bottom. I then make out a muffled yell/scream from julie's snorkle. I swim over to her to see what she has her light fixed upon. Barely sticking its head out of the sand is the eyes and mouth of a nice butt. I aim for the head and feed it some steel. Julie was able to catch some of the action on tape, but it didn't turn out well because the handheld lights were not as bright as the cameras' lights. I put the butt on my stringer and traded the gun for the camera as it was julies turn to get some butt. Unfortunately, we didn't see another fish and it started to get a bit chilly in the suits, so we headed in. The butt weighed 10.5 lbs... it was long and wide but the filets were thin. We are headed back out tommorrow night in hopes of some more, BIGGER BUTTS J-Lo style. Also, to answer the question before it gets asked....Where did we dive.......... the answer is... the ocean.
I have a picture, however its too large to send, i need it compressed, so i should have the pic in a day or so

Nice report, glad you were able to drag your girl out. It's nice when you can share your hobbies with someone you care about.
What kind of water temp do you have right now? What kind of suits are you wearing?

water temp has been in the high 50's to very low 60's. Julie was wearing her 5mm Picasso suit and i was wearing my M&B 7mm. You are too correct, sharing a sport like this with someone you care about is a great experience.... i just feel bad she didn't get a fish, i should have been the gentleman and had "ladies go first."

If she sees how excited you get and that you CAN get fish, whe will be back. Two reasons, like most of us she catches the hunting bug and enjoys the pure rush of everything or she just wants to be around you and share in something you love. Which means you might have to share in something she loves, like shopping. Fair trade off don't you think???
I guess the water is not that far off from the gulf right now. It was 60 on Sunday and I had a 7/5 Henderson, a 5 hood and a skin. I was toasty, except my mouth that got a little numb.
My feeling is she will be back out there and then you can make sure she gets a fish. Have fun!

I know that spot! Nice work on the nighty butt. I have forgotten what the ocean looks like. Talk to you later.

That's a nice sentiment, but I think it's a bit more than a hobbie for Julie. Biggsy, if you don't know who she, check out www.speargun.com.

I had no idea who she was. Thanks for sharing that link. It seems as though she is not who I thought she was and has some experience. The venture sounded fun in any event.
I actually have a problem spearing at night. I think it's an unfair advantage because fish are less active at night and takes the fun of the hunt and stalk out of it. My $.02 anyway.
happy hunting!

Wow...I just spoke with him on the phone the other day. He sounded like a good guy. I hope he'll be alright.
