"Any Oklahoma Spearers? "
How about Marcus Spears (pun very intended) , Marquisse Hill, Chad Lavalais, Lionel Turner, etc etc. Looked to me like they got to do plenty of "spearing" in Oklahoma.
Sorry, couldnt resist. The way I look at it, we at least get the month of January to talk shit, after that its a clean slate.

are you interested in freshwater or going down to the oil rigs in the gulf.

The Gulf is preferable..But anything to get started. All my plans were cancelled by the wife last year.

I learned to hunt fish up there. It combines the challenge of limited species target identification with the necessity for stealth and quick shooting. If you're not stealthy you'll nevrr get close enough to see the target, the target must be identified (Heaven help the Okie that shoots a channel cat instead of a bullhead.) and then the gun must be put on target and shot, before the fish swims out of the 6' vis. If you spook the fish skeet station #8 will seem like it's taking all day to get to you in comparison.
EVERYTHING you learn in OK/AR/MO lakes about technique and stealth applies in the Ocean! You'll just have to develop a longer list of identification skills for the salt water species. The experience learning to ID fish in the mudholes will greatly speed up that chore once you get in salt water.

I like to go out of Sabine Pass .The dive shop there has 3 boats this year and they are great guys . they will plan the trips to suit the levels of the divers .They should have their schedule together within the next week .weekends usually get spoken for a month or two in advance .especially right after red snapper season opens.if you are interested in going with me sometime let me know your schedule and I will try to match mine with yours. I usually drive through Dallas/fort worth on the way .We could meet up somewhere and you could ride the rest of the way with me .Or if your schedule doesn't mesh with mine I can give you the names and numbers in case you want to go with the same guys I do.

Of course you have to keep in mind .The weather can cancel a trip at the last minute. it doesn't hurt to have alternate plans just in case.

Joens,
I own the business and can pretty much take off during the week. I would really like to get started this year, I just have to schedule around the wife. She is pregnant with our first and due in early July so I need to be around for her. April will probably be the latest I could get out until after the baby, then it depends on the health. But I would be able to stay close and go to the lakes during those times :D
FredT,
looking at the new fishing regs I think they opened blues to be taken by speargun:
GIG, GRABHOOK, SPEAR AND SPEARGUN: Gigs and spears are legal for taking nongame fish and white bass only. Grabhooks (handheld hook or handheld pole or rope with a single hook attached used in the initial taking of a fish) are prohibited in all state waters, except SCUBA divers in Delaware and Mayes counties (excluding tailwaters which are closed) may use grabhooks to take nongame fish only from June 15 through July 31. Spearguns used by SCUBA divers are legal for taking nongame fish, blue and channel catfish. Gigs, spears and spearguns shall:
• not contain more than three (3) points with no more than two (2) barbs on each point;
• be lawful in all rivers and streams from Dec. 1 through Mar. 31, year-round in all reservoirs, unless restricted under “SPECIAL RESTRICTIONS.”
• be lawful year-round in rivers and streams in Delaware and Mayes Counties, unless restricted under “SPECIAL RESTRICTIONS.”

Good to see they are opening up a bit. Now if they managed to add bass and panfish the rules would start to make sense.
My last Ok fishinig license was issued in '73 though. I'm probably a bit out of date on the rules.

I was barely 2 years old in '73:D
I may not make it to the coast, but I will be in the lakes here this year. I dove Lake Murray last summer with pretty good vis. The bass stayed close checking me and the partner out. I only saw one cat and it took off fast. I may try to bait that area around a sunk platform and see if it draws anything out. I will have to make sure that is legal though.
Whats the best time to hunt freshwater? Mostly for cats since it is the only thing really worth eating thats legal here.

I usually make it to tenkiller a couple of times a year and am the prowd owner of a bayliner 175. We should try to hook up whe the water warms up and kill some fish.
