Spierre, (www.spierre.com) run by Pierre Liebenberg in the Western Cape, has been known in South Africa as a Premier Fin Manufacturer. With 6x SA National Champion Jaco Blignaut, SA Top competitor Marc White, Erik Lombard Eyal Abro(Israel), and 2x Official Freediving World Record Holder Trevor Hutton using the blades Sumora had to distribute these champion fins to the US market. Plus we think they look quite pretty :thumps:

Pure Carbon Blades
Each Carbon blade is meticulously hand made with its own unique formula by applying layers of pure carbon fiber combined with a high quality epoxy resin system. The resulting power blade provides unsurpassed perfromance enabling you to descend comfortably to depths, pushing personal boundaries, whilst conserving valuable energy with the confidence that the blade will provide the necessary power when needed during the critical ascent to the surface. Soft rubber borders on both sides of the blades channel water flow effectively across blade surface ensuring thrust throughout the kick.

I have met Pierre back in May in Western Cape, class act guy and excellent craftsmanship on these blades! New camo patterns are unbelievable!

Great to see Sumora picked up the distribution and is going to give these worthy products the exposure they deserve. Good luck, great stuff! :thumps:

The camo on the fiberglass blades is awesome. If I wouldn't have just picked up a set of Edge blades, these would be high on my list!

Eric,
Is the price listed per blade or per set of blades?
Thanks

Hi bruce_s

The price is per set of blades. The Camo is undergoing treatment but the Carbon fins should be sent from South Africa fairly soon - Hopefully to arrive our warehouse late August. The Camo undergoes a slightly longer process so they should arrive 1-2 weeks after.

Cheers,

Erik

any warranty on these fins?

Hi Tuffstuff,

There is a 2 year warranty against breakage during acceptable normal usage :)

We should have our first Carbon fins in a few weeks!! Camo blades to come roughly 2 weeks after that!

Camouflage fins are now available in Medium-Soft!!

Fiberglass Composite (No Camouflage) are even more affordable than the Camouflage version and will be coming in any day!

Thanks Roberto :)

The most important thing to bear in mind with our PURE CARBON blades is that although they may appear the same as any of the other carbons, they are manufactured from only carbon cloth throughout. The majority of carbon fins in the market are constructed using one layer of carbon on the outside of the composite construction whereas the inside consists of multiple layers of fiberglass cloth. By using pure carbon throughout the construction you are getting the maximum effect that carbon fiber can offer – superior return to original position, optimal memory etc. Adding fiberglass to the inside diminishes on this as fiberglass has quite different properties to carbon fiber.

The carbon composites are not the same as the pure carbon blades and this becomes evident when diving deep. The majority of divers purchasing our Pure Carbons are switching from other (well-known brands) of carbon blades, preferring the performance of our blades way above the blades they have been using.

Apart from the performance, the cost to manufacture a pure carbon blade using only carbon cloth throughout is obviously therefore close to double the cost of a normal carbon blade but we have chosen this route for one simple reason – to produce the very best blade possible.

Just out of interest, taken from the South African Spearfishing ranking website, the following is a list of the current top ranked SA divers using our Pure Carbons:

Gyula Plaganyi – ranked no. 1 (Captain)

James Lawson-Smith – ranked 2

Allen Fraser – ranked 4

Mark Jackson – ranked 5

Adriaan Kriel – ranked 7

Gareth Staats – ranked 9

Gletwyn Rubidge – ranked 10

As well as Springboks:

Tommy Botha – 12X National Champion

Jaco Blignaut – 5x National Champion

Erik Lombard

Ryan Burmeister

Marc White

Edward Hayman

Trevor Hutton – 2x World Freediving Record Holder

And many more like

What brands aren't PURE CARBON when they state Carbon?

yes, Erik, I'm also curious as to what well-known carbon fins you are referring to...

Count me in too. Which manufacturer are you referring to?

Hi there, will try to get details. As per my other post I think in the "all other gear" subforum, this is a quotation from Pierre of Spierre. I meant to quote it " " so you wouldn't jump all over me :) My mistake!

I asked him the question - he mentioned "unless the manufacturer states it's made from pure carbon there is a reason"

That said, let me get more info!

Erik

Here's a review from Gletwyn Rubidge, competition diver in SA. He has an informative website with good pictures and videos, and my favorite - some recipes :): http://southafricaspearfishing.blogspot.com/

Though the formatting of that weather report has problems (for me).

On Sunday I dived a long long time - being forced to remain out at sea by the occurence of the Herald Cycle tour and the closed roads (6 am - 3 pm).

I prior years I had use dmy Picasso black team Carbon fins of RIY and thought they were good I had two chief problems:
1. the make a woop woop sound as the straiten on certain strokes which may spook fish
2. i would cramp after about 6-7 hours of continuos diving.

With my Spierre fins I have neither of those problems. Cramps with them - WHat's That??
Also the wooping sound is not generated - I think because its blade is slightly wider and longer and somewhat less stiff. I actually use the Picasso carbons - one foot Spierre other Picasso - the superiority of teh Spiere carbons is readily apparent this way. My pair have blades 3 cm longer than nornmal and they are fitted with RobAllen/Picasso footpockets.

The nice thing was that I could dive with 4 weights instead of the normal five and do small calf type kicks which are econmomical.

So the bottom line is that a 6 am to 6 pm dive in 15-25 m of water,
swimming moderate curent,
with hardly any breaks except to move the boat,
with no cramps,
while I was rather unfit,
is quite managable with the right fins.
