1978 23 Correct Craft Fish Nautique...I like Old School stuff.
Me and my father paid $2000 for it and that included
the 2 axel alum. trailer, so i guess you can figure out what
kind of shape it was in..!!!!!
it is powered with a small block chevy 315hp 350ci.
"ALL" work was done in my garage including the fish
paintings on the side by my mother..
the hull is imron.
front casting deck is kledgecell foam core.
I took the old floor and stringer system out with a
chainsaw..blah blah blah blah nickle dime nickle dime.....
I like messing with boats....
this is the third major ive done for me....
it was a major contribution on my dads behalf
for time and "money" spent.
the boat belongs to my 12 year old brother.....

Just a personal note that the Dagodiver's boat is one sweet ride. It has tons of room for a 23' or even a 25'. Great fuel consumption and takes real rough seas. Hey Rock Bottom that looks like the Keys. Maybe Key Colony?????

Excellent call. I picked the boat up at The Boat House and fished it for a few days before a tropical storm ran us out. I put it on a trailer and headed for New Orleans, and after almost a twenty hour drive fished a flat calm ocean out of Venice (LA.) I first fished a 25 Parker in Marathon and knew that was the boat I would buy next. I have some great friends that have a house in Key Colony.

Dagodiver that is some impressive work, I a'm so jealous of your ability to restor such a wonderful hull I bet it takes seas like a dream. Anyway heres my store bought ride. Paramount is a small boat builder in Dania Fla., Darrel has been building these hulls for over 20 years. Nobody will beat the price of his packages nor the preformance of this hull. www.paramountpowerboats.com If you go to the miami show to look at a 21' or a 26' go fast CC stop by his shop, see his work, and get a quote. You will be amazed after you've been to the show.

Yes, believe it or not, that boat was given to me. I had asked the guy about that boat about 10 years ago, after he found out that the floor was rotten. I asked him if he wanted to sell it then, he told me no and that he was gonna fix it. Well , the boat sat up ever since then. Back around september or so I asked him about it again and he said to come get it if I wanted it. So I did. I will replace the motors eventually, but had both motors fired up and running on only the 3rd crank after sitting for at least 10 yrs. Crazy about a Mercury! hehe Already started working on the transom, waiting to find a cheaper, used motor bracket and then start on the floor.

The photo thing is a mystery to me. I can see the pics just fine, but cant for the life of me figure out why others cant.

Dagodiver, your boat is really, really nice. I can tell you are an excellent craftsman. I just got a boat, and it still needs a few things to make it seaworthy. My biggest problem is that the gas tank developed a leak, and it's pretty old, so I'm just going to replace it. Chad Carney told me you might do that type of work. Is that true? It's not a standard size, so I need an aluminum gas tank welded to replace the existing one. If you don't do that, do you know where I can get one made?

Very nice ride Sheri..
I vote yes on the Hydraulic steering.
that looks like a fast hull..
Lathem IMO is the best mid priced system on the market
but there are other choices for under or around $1000 buy
the time you install with all the fittings.
Yes PM me that will be fine..
I usually do one wreck per month out of pompano.

Well, I think she looks better in the picture than in person, but I still love her, and I want to get her running good. I am experiencing the joys of boat ownership already, and I haven't even taken her out. I'm afraid somebody is going to walk by where she is stored while smoking a cigarette.....and KABOOM!

Even worse, I don't have insurance yet, because I have to get a survey first (because it was rebuilt from scratch and it says "homemade" on the title), and I can't get a survey until I fix some major flaws. So I sure hope she doesn't blow up in the meantime. I wonder if homeowner's insurance covers me if someone gets injured from something like that.

Everybody warned me, but I just had to do it. With some effort, I think it'll be a cute little boat.

Here's another picture of Sheri's boat with Art Pinder who put his heart into customizing it for her. The V hull is an old SeaV 21 that was later bought out by Chaparelle and later bought out by Wellcraft. Art added a custom diving platform/engine bracket that extended it to 22'. It cuts right throught the chop with its 225 hp. It still needs some work, but it's going to be a great working boat when Sheri's done.

BTW, I am casting the shadow over Sheri's feet. No - those are not white Red Ball boots. Sorry guys. :p

Sheri,

Looking at your pic, I would really consider a new trailer, or serious work on that one. And I would recommend rollers (urethane) over bunks as they are MUCH easier to load/unload. And surge brakes on at least one axle, unless you are only a mile or two from the launch ramp. Trailers used in salt water are almost as big a pain the ass as the boat.

Also, I don't see any electronics. I can testify that they are expensive (were a third of the cost of my boat), but worth whatever you can spend. Color chartplotter/sonar (radar to a lesser degree), autpilot, FLOSCAN, EPIRB are all very good to have. I have Raymarine, but would think any of the major brands are probably good.

That is a really nice project you have there. Thanks everyone for the input. I am trying to make the decisions on my project. Right now I am just working on an inbord for whatever hull I get. My new project boat (4th boat for me, first for my wife). She's a 27' 1967 Chris Craft Commander that was offered so cheap we couldnt resist. Aside from some minor window seal repair and gelcoat touchup and painting, the vessel is in great shape! The cabin is going to be revamped some and the wood restained, the wiring is going to be replaced in from the command console out, new controls and such put in and we were fortunate enough that someone had already pulled the old motor and transmission that were not in good shape.... but it appears we have a replacement for that as well. Here's what the Sea Shanty looks like at current after an initial clean up! Sorry, no pix of the empty motorwell here ;)

Ed Walker
02-15-2004, 02:22 PM
The Rampage is a great hull. Solid and has a 12 foot beam. We looked long and hard for it all over the state. Finally found this one in Carabelle. They havent made this hull since 89' so many of those you see today are beat. Ours had been re-done. Its not the fastest, only got a pair of 200 Volvos but she cruises efficiently at about 20 MPH. The plan is to add a pair of 300's when we win one of these kingfish tournaments one of these days. When the weather hits you theres not many other 31s I would rather be in. We have been thru some pretty bad s### on occasion and the old girl takes it very well.

There is a story about one of these that went down out of the Panhandle a few years ago. The way I heard it (twice) was that everyone was down for a dive and had left the transom door open. Since it opens very close to water level and the seas built up, she took a bunch of water into the stern thru the open door and supposedly passed the divers on its way to the bottom. How bad would that suck?

Nitroxshooter

Some of you fellas have some nice boats!

Finding a boat that you want is easy... finding one that is more in your budget is hard. The boat that I have now (see pix earlier in the thread) my wife and I lucked into for $500 (the blue book is quite a bit more). I've got the whole thing ready for restore (gelcoat repair, deck paint, and new power plant/tranny) and I've got to admit that I'm in awe at the steal of a purchase. Fortunately there is nothing in need of major repair work, just elbow grease and some love. :)

Anyone in the Ft Myers area with some skills in glass, gelcoat scratch repair, wood staining, or mechanics that would be willing to help get her in the water, I'll trade dive trips for the help (i.e. I'll pay for the fuel and lunch and such)... just a thought. :D

Hey cbulla,
Ok here is what you do, go to the local fiberglass shop and
bring something on the boat that is the right color and tell
them to match you a guart of gel coat with "no wax".
Then buy 2 prevail sprayer's
1 quart of styrene
1 quart of PVA (the green stuff)
Then on your way home stop at the store and buy 1 bottle
of Captain Morgan's Silver spiced rum.
Them PM me and i will come down and
show you what to do with the top
ingriendents and i will take the last 1 home....!!!!
Dago.

my father bought this boat 3 years before i was born. about 5 years ago we got out the hydraulic jacks and cynderblocks to lift the boat off of the trailer the boat had rotted on for 12 years. my father had stopped using it when the hurricane (andrew) destroyed the trailer. he passed away and moving the boat out of my late grandparents yard became an issue.

http://www.zerotoleranceboats.com/spearbucknasty.jpg

the picture above was the condition of the boat. the bushes on the left are not falling in to the boat they are growing out of the rotted leaves soil that was about 6 inches deep. cats had been living in the boat for years, my sister told me a litter had been birthed in the cabin not 3 months before.

http://www.zerotoleranceboats.com/bertramspearpaint.jpg

above: i made the right friends and worked hard. this is the boat leaving zero tolerance powerboats in opa locka. they were nice enough to let me use their shop and teach me everything. i had worked for a marine mechanic for a summer but that is a brand new paint job. i helped spray it and learned how it was done.

http://www.zerotoleranceboats.com/themotorsran.jpg

above: this is the first time the boat touched the water in 14 years. those are two in-line 6 mercruisers attached to 280-Volvo Penta drives (bywayof commander gears). you might be saying wtf? but it takes alot of the classic reliable technology. hey, they are still reliable that says enough.

http://www.zerotoleranceboats.com/bertramspearlast.jpg

above: the boat is a classic fishing machine. the blood of many dolphin, hogfish and grouper is spilled upon it in the ceremony of my youth. it is an offshore monster, 25' long, 9'11" beam, 5500 pounds deep V, 5 chines. not a bad boat for a 25 year old. we were big sailors so a hull meant everything--i remember clearly my dad saying i would teach my son how to bait a hook on that boat when i was too young to tie my own hook. he was right, a truely great boat will last forever.

well, you guys asked for it. i dont have too many pictures of the full boat, now i'm usually in it so fast i dont even have a chance to take any photos

http://www.zerotoleranceboats.com/3sideprofile.jpg

i was thinking of showing more photos of the work that was done to the boat, but there is simply no way. we did everything on that boat--ripped the old fiberglass tank out with die-grinders (had varnish stalagtites in it), had pieces of the deck pulled up. it was an enourmous project that i put more time in than i can really put together during every spare chance i had.

http://www.zerotoleranceboats.com/3paint.jpg

if someone was thinking about doing this unless they plan on spending a fortune they need to be prepared to spend a year working on something, at least. the can of worms theory is correct. this is right after i painted the signature red stripe on the side. it took me about 4 hours to tape that off and its damn perfect.

http://www.zerotoleranceboats.com/3crap.jpg

above: another picture of the boat in my grandmother's yard

ok, lets get to some of the good times had in the boat now

http://www.zerotoleranceboats.com/atsandbar.jpg

hey, when the visibility is bad, just sit on sands cut and drink pina coladas. that's my philosophy.

http://www.zerotoleranceboats.com/jay.jpg

this is what the boat is all about. that is my oldest brother's daughter. he grew up as a teenager fishing on the bertram.

http://www.zerotoleranceboats.com/champion.jpg

... ok its another microscopic grunt... but to her is was "the championship fish!"

http://www.zerotoleranceboats.com/sunset.jpg
http://www.zerotoleranceboats.com/timtimay.jpg

still have alot of interior work to do. job is never done

http://www.zerotoleranceboats.com/nightbackgroundboat.jpg
http://www.zerotoleranceboats.com/momonback.jpg

special dedication to my mother (above). she helped sand the boat and help every step of the way. nobody works harder... and to be honest she prefers many things over being on the water. when i was a kid it was her job to put sunblock on us about 40 times an hour and make about 30 sandwiches (stoping the boats movement and halting all fishing activities). NOTHING HAS CHANGED IN 15 YEARS. she even tried to put sunblock on me!!!

that's it for now. dont hesitate to contact me if you are thinking about fixing up an old boat. they are fantastic, technology with fiberglass was such that people overbuilt boats not understanding the basic chemical properties of resins. the boats hull is something along the lines of an inch thick with enourmous stringers and stringer/floatation containers all over the damn boat. my dad was tying rigs and ran the boat smack in to the mangroves at elliot key, seatow yanked us out backward by the tow rings and we drove away (yeah, i had to fix the paint on that one during the process). the old advertisements were they would drop this same model boat off a crane and push it in to the water with a bulldozer and drive off. yeah, that's right.

happy sailing!! let me know if you are ever up for a journey on the bertram (no name, never had one never will)

- scott

hell, i saw one in the keys out front of a gas station for sale for i think 1800 bucks. it was an 18 bertram with windsheild and a single 8 cylinder--eerily enough it had a volvo 280 on it which i would have bought right there for parts. stupid setup on it... BUT OH GOD IT WOULD MAKE A SWEET CENTER CONSOLE WALK AROUND WITH A BRAKETED OUTBOARD. OHHHHH MAN.

would have been the most solid 18 lil' sportfish on the water. one day when i have money...

let me know, seriously. anybody need advice or help i am moving back to miami this summer. i'l show up with some tools you just bring the beer. every minute you spend working on a boat makes every minute on the water a better experience... plus you can fix your boat when it breaks down which comes in REAL handy.

The marina I am keeping my "project" at seems to have a knack for finding project boats like mine and moppymans. I would be happy to take pix and post for anyone interested.

I do happen to know that a 33' sport fishing boat is tied to the docks there and the owner wants to offload it for about $20k. The old guy who owns it has simply run out of ooomph to even come down and care for it anymore. I believe it has a pair of inboards.. and a very nice cabin for over night/weekend/week trips. :) There are a few more of such nature at the marina and a plethora of smaller boats. Anyone interested PM me and I'll point you in the right direction.

Thanks for letting us know. Right now I am too far away. I have had to pass up some wonderfull deals. Hopefuly after our baby is born and healthy I can take an extended trip but that will be later in the year. A smaller boat in the 25 range and trailerable is what I am looking for though...

most solid boat Ive ever been on, comparable to an older bertram hull in quality and thats saying alot. No echo at all when you jump on the deck....like jumping on concrete. Thats also why it cruises in the 30's and tops at 40 while a 31 contender cruises 50 or so with the same power....

Here's my current project .. the photo's were taken about one year ago.

http://www.noahs-ark.biz/freetime.htm

It's a complete and total restoration of a Keys 6-pack dive charter vessel. Scheduled completion is July 2004. The new CAT diesel goes in next week, followed by an integrated PC-based, marine electronics system (engine, navigation, etc) I can just about guarantee you've never seen before as its so new there are not many installed in the USA, only over in Europe. Most of the deck hardware, such as dive racks/benches, running lights, windlass, bowsprint, anchor is custom/semi-custom, yes even the anchor (we sell a custom line manufactured for us overseas and we are the only distributor here in the US.)

I am in the marine business, and if you need something for your vessel and you see it on my website, give me a call and mention spearboard .. I'll work you out a discount. I specialize in all the stuff you won't find at your local marine supplier.

21' 1995 Seacat! :)

It took quite a while to get her set up 'just right', but it has definitely been worth it. The twin Honda 90s give me a cruising speed of 25 to 28 mph, averaging 2.6 mpg. I've made several trips out to the southern end of the middlegrounds in it and it handles rough water beautifully. I can carry 8 tanks in the forward gunwhale racks and six in a pelican rack behind the leaning post.

I'm finally back out on the water this year after replacing the steering with a hydraulic system (sweet!) and I'm looking forward to breaking in my new 52" Rhino Commercial (thanks Kevin).

I have tank racks for 12 tanks, a killer dive ladder, that a bus just hit, and a dive flag already painted on the side. I don't ever have to fly the flag, I like to be incognito.
