Hi all
With Pelaj products now available we will be showcasing some of our most popular items on SpearBoard over the next few weeks.
This week - the Pelaj Megafloatline.
The Megafloatline is a Bluewater floatline that has been 100% destruction tested in places such as the Coral Sea, Australia and La Paz, Mexico.
This product combines floatline and bungee functionality - each Megafloatline stretches to 1.5 x its relaxed length.
Extruded from ultra durable 10mm self healing PVC and cored with 400KG (880lbs) soft Dyneema the Megafloatline also features high tensile stainless steel plugs, D-shackles, a speed needle for quick stringing and handy mesh bag and strap for storage.
It is available in the following variants in the US:
- 10m (32ft) - stretches to 15m (49ft) MSRP: $99 (only 15 left!);
- 20m (65ft) – stretches to 30m (98ft) MSRP: $119;
- 30m (98ft) – stretches to 45m (147ft) MSRP: $139.
Dont forget your 10% SpearBoard discount which reduces these prices further - the first 10 to order will receive a free Pelaj cap!

Very nice looking floatline.
What is the long metal piece for?

Quick question. The floatline stretches out, but does it stretch "elastically" like a bungie? All "plain tubing" floatlines will stretch out to some extent, but the advantage of the bungie is that it stretches and pulls back throughout the fight. How does this float line respond? Thanks.

Hi Guys
The PVC is only available in clear this season - we may do another colour next season - the problem is any coloured tubing becomes solid and spooks wary fish. Some guys get asound this using a ghost leader between the floatline and gun which is a clear 6 -10m 1000lb length of mono which becomes opaque and doesnt scare wary fish.
The metal "speed" needle is for theading fish which then floats up the floatline to the stringer on your float - saves you having to retrieve your float to thread the fish. See http://www.pelaj.com/catalogue.asp page 18 for a picture. Very handy to have especialy when used in conjunction with the speed stringer which hangs below your float.
The Megafloatlines stretch to 50% of their relaxed length but it is a slow stretch which requires quite a lot of force to activate which is why for most non bluewater applications they are better than bungees especially in surge. They are cored with 400KG soft dyneema which prevents them from stretching beyond a recovery point.
Kindest regards

Hi Matt,
I used to do that with another brand floatline (black tubing), but after few fishes, the floatline tubing punctured with the fish teeth/gills and started to get flooded with water not floating anymore. Do you really recommend to do so with your floatlines? Are they really much stronger than the others?
By the way, nice looking floatline ;)

Hi Marco
Thanks for your post.
We worked long and hard to develop a product that overcame issues such as the one you mention (punctured tubing which floods the line).
In fact, the tubing in our initial production samples failed miserably over long term field tests so we went back to the drawing board and came up with the current materials.
The PVC is super heavy duty so as to integrate bungee/floatline functionality as well as offering a means by which to string your catch (all very common practices in Australia) without the product being easily damaged.
Megafloatlines have been available in Australia for about 2 years now, as you can imagine nothing indicates the true quality of a product better than long term, real life destruction testing!
We have had many divers use and abuse the Megafloatline in Bluewater conditions, places like the Coral Sea, the Abrohlis Islands (in Western Australia) and even a few in LaPaz (at the 2007 BW meet). Thus far we have not had any reports of the tube being punctured, even when used on gear-busting Pelagics like Dog Tooth Tunas etc.
Perhaps a few SpearBoarders can post their thoughts of the product after getting their Megafloatlines in the water?
We welcome the feedback (if we can make it even better - we will)!
Kindest regards
Matt Jones

I can say that these Lines are WAY better then some others on the market. I personally tested these lines out in La Paz both in 2007 and 2008 at the World Cup and it held up great. Its tuff and I love the Speed Needle. No Signs of holes or punkture marks at all on the line... Thanks for an awesome product Matt as well as being an Awesome Sponsor for Both The World Cup and The Rocky Mountain Spearfishing Series...

String your fish through the eyes, not through the gills/mouth. That way you get more fish on the stringer too! And there is no chance of damaging your line!

I may not have my priorities right, but in Southern California, I'm more concerned with having my float line run over by a boat than I am concerned about spooking a wary fish. If you are looking for suggestions for that other color, I like bright yellow or orange.

There was a post here or on one of the other spearfishing sites some years back about dying the clear PVC...

the speed needle.... has to be one of the greatest inventions ever now stringing all my fish up takes 2 seconds and i dont get chomped or have spend forever trying to get them to open their mouths. still cant get over the hardware.

I have mates that have been using a speed rig since the day they started diving, over 30 years ago. Not a new invention by any means but as they say, an oldie but a goodie! Another way to string toothy fish like mangrove jack & spanish mackerel is gil to gil instead of through the eyes. This will prevent puncturing from the teeth. However the fish don't tow as streamlined which is why I never do it. Personally I use 4.5mm 4 strand rope from thailand as I string 99% of my fish as PVC floatlines don't suit my diving style. Each to their own but a lot of guys here is Oz are rating them.
