Talking about fisheries management battles, legal actions, and restricitons...blah blah blah..... is getting old. Sure would be nice to read about someones actual spearfishing trip. Maybe someday this freakin' weather will turn it back into Florida again. Winter has gone on long enough.

Ed, you know I agree with you. Haaaate cold water. You've got it much worse on the West Coast. I hear it's been nasty and cold over there. I have managed to get out at least once on weekends lately. You and Chad Carney should come over here for a weekend. Bring the wives...I've got plenty of room.

Here's a recent trip report. Chad Palan here wears me out. He freedives to 100 feet like it's nothing. I had to chase him all over the damn ocean, up, down, back and forth. Whew....I was exhausted!

To be clear here, we had three people on the boat, so we got our limit. Chad is, by far, the most selective guy I go out with anyway. We had to work very hard to get these. I had many relatives and friends to feed that night, and we had a feast. Puts the pressure on when you've invited a bunch of people for a fish dinner, and then you've still gotta catch 'em!

Ed, here's a picture to warm you up. That was a fun day. Those sunny, flat, warm water days will be here soon!

Those look like some nice size gags. I may take you up on that offer. Whats the water temp over there? Ill check my schedule maybe we'll take a ride over. I am jonesin' to shoot some fish, that is if my gear hasnt dry rotted in the garage. Like to try some of the guns we talked about too.

Water is 72 degrees over here. Still kind of chilly, but ever since I dove in Rhode Island I quit complaining. I hear California is even worse. So I just shut my big mouth now and dive. I shiver in silence.

The whole key to diving in the winter is to wear a Picasso wetsuit...two piece, 5 mil, with a hood, and you would not believe how warm it keeps you. It's the most comfortable of all the wetsuits, in my opinion. Pour hot water in it once in awhile, pee on yourself, drink hot soup, and you'll be just fine. When I get into fish, I become oblivious to temperature.

Come on over, guys!

Jeez. Id be in the water pretty quick in that temp. Man thats a whole lot warmer than here. I think its like 58 here now. I get cold just walking past my dock to get another log for the fireplace. Hell my retreiver thinks twice about going in. He gets pissed when I throw his ball in the water. We'll be coming over. Ill give you a call.

Rig, you already know you are welcome here anytime....so come on down! Wife and kid are welcome too. My boat should be working by then, but I also have enough friends I can impose on.

Sheri: It looks like Chad's wetsuit has a pad over the sternum, presumably for completing the cocking of his Riffe. Is that suit also made by Riffe? Does Chad use that for cocking?

Nice fish. I am going to put that photo on the home page.

Thanks, Scott. They aren't the biggest fish, but it took hard work to get them!

Those are not Riffe guns....we are both avid users of Daryl Wong spearguns. In fact, Chad is the one that got me into them. I figured whatever he uses, I want to use. And that logic has worked well for me.....didn't have to learn everything by trial and error.

The only thing I will never wear is those goofy lizzard wetsuits he's got on (no, not a Riffe either). I wear a Picasso, which is soft and comfortable and really warm. I have the top off in the picture, but it also has a loading pad. All the freediving wetsuits have a loading pad for chest loading of the spearguns. You can also use a regular wetsuit and put a mouse pad inside if you like to chest load.

Sheri, do you find a 5mm Picasso too warm for diving in 70+ degree F water?

Sheri
02-11-2004, 10:25 PM
No, I find 5mm is perfect for me in 72 degrees. I think most others are OK in 3mm though. I admit it....I'm a cold water weenie. You really are better off in the thinnest suit you can tolerate. Takes a lot of effort to get off the bottom when you've got a lot of weight around your waist. On the other hand, if you're shivering, your breathhold is going to suffer. Typical trade offs.

It's a blessing if you can get your body to be warm and your face to be cold (that mammalian dive reflex thing). That's what I say in order to make myself feel better, anyway.

if I do get down that way Sheri, I would be interested in having the reel on my hybrid mounted like yours. Same reel looks like the same gun(50"cf), think that would be possible?
