hey peoples!

Im really held on spearing from the florida beaches, and I know a kayak will make it easier. All I want is a two seater that is stable with a bright color. However, Im extremely low on cash, so I dont want to spend more than 500. I went to a sports authority and found a pelican 15.5 for 450. It seems to have everything im looking for, and Im pretty close to buying it.

Any objections? Better Ideas?

Have you considered looking on Craigslist.com? You can find great deals on kayaks there that are fully rigged with everything you'll need like paddles and a seat pad, plus few other things that would all cost you to go over your budget and are needed anyway.

You should be able to find them locally within your state on Craigslist.com with no problem. Just go and pick it up. Most people will not ship the kayaks. Local pickup only. I got mine for $500 and came with everything I needed and I had to drive 100 miles to pick it up. Well worth the drive. Good luck.

Those pelicans are great for the money. But if you're keeping options open check with your local shop that rents them. I bought my first one for 150.oo (spent another 100.oo on a seat and paddle). It was faded real bad but I didn't care.

Good luck.

I'd hold out for a used one from anyone of these companies, cobra, ocean kayak, wilderness systems, hobie, malibu kayaks... A pelican will put you on the water, but are poorly designed. I am not sure about FL, but in CA, craigslist always has kayaks for sale. Maybe checkout your kayakfishing sites for sale sections... only one I know of is www.jaxkayakfishing.com

Hey yaudon, thanks alot for your concern and your hookup (thats awesome), but yea I actually found one on craigslist like two weeks back!:thumps: A malibu 2 for 340! Ive been working on outfitting it for spearing, havnt really used it with sucess because the beaches have been good only for surfers. Still im super stoked on using it!

Just want to thank everyone for helping me out. You were all right in pointing me towards craigslist- with patience it definitely paid off!

I'm glad that you waited and got a great kayak at a great price. They do hold their value, so if it is in great conditions you can sell it at a great price when the moment comes. When ever you are ready to go out on the kayak, let me know. Also, if you are going to buy rod holders for it, let me know. I have the scotty style rod holders cheaper than bass pro. pm me your info.

Hia leah, if you will be doing spearfishing off the kayak make sure you get

a sit on top kayak, a great kayak for not too much money is an Ocean Kayak.

this is what i would get for $500.

hands down best yak for the money, sometimes they have it on sale for 400.

if you only want to get from point a to point b and just need a kayak, that's a somewhat good option. BUT, for resale it is worth crap. It is a very slow model and to much hull slap if you are going to be using it for fishing. Overall, ocean kayaks, is not manufacturing the scrambler anymore due to all the negative feedback that it has received from the fishing community. If you want a great kayak perfect for kayak fishing, and great for spearfishing and a exceptional resale value, go for the prowler 13 or the trident 15 and the prowler big game for stability. This are the two kayaks that I use for my tours and rentals. Malibu, cobra, wilderness and heritage also manufacture excellent fish and dive kayaks with amazing resale values. Rent a few different models, try them out. Not every kayak is designed for everyone. Go to www.reelkayaking.com or visit kayak jeffs in dania or adventure sports in doral. they will point you out in the right direction.

I do kayak fishing tours and eco-tours. We also organize kayak fishing tournaments in south Florida and we are developing the first full fishing equipment designed for kayaks.

Hey yaudon, whats the best way to know if its a good day to take the kayak out from a beach? I dont like driving to one just to find out that the water is harsh even past the breakers.

for starters check the weather report. go online and find out the wind speed at the coast guard station @ south beach. tide reports. there are a lot of factors to consider and learn. this link might help you out in some ways. I use it for the biscayne/deering area.

That Aquaterra Prism for sale a few threads down is a great deal at $200. As long as it's not brittle.
It's very similar to the Scupper Pro.

Check Craigslist daily. Look for a ScupperPro or Prowler. I know of two ScupperPro's I have seen in past month in Tampa Area Craig's list for $550, and I have seen one in Ft. Lauderdale area too, for $500 I think. Check the local paper. Some older folks who are not computer literate still use the paper to sell things like kayaks in the classified ads of the paper. Keep looking, you'll find one for your needs. I have found a "like new" 13' Prowler and 15' Prowler recently at a great price. Have cash on hand and be ready to strike when you see the one you want.

craigslist is the best, also check out ebay and search a few miles around your zipcode.
