Dive Rite was giving tech demo dives today. They had rebreathers available. I jumped on that. It seemed pretty easy except for bouyancy was a bit tricky. I was alright moving but it was alot harder to get nuetral when stopped than open circuit rigs.
The front lung compensators(cant' remember the name.) took some getting used to. The double hoses certainly cut down on side to side turnability.
It would be neat to have but they are way out of my budget as for now. They said the price was $7,500 and training another $1,500.

They are making an interesting rebreather product. I am not going in that direction because you can not spearfish on a rebreather.

because you can not spearfish on a rebreather.
Is that just Florida? or can you anywhere else to your knowledge?

I asked that very question about a week ago, and was told by a friend that you can rebreather spearfish in Federal Waters.

This issue has been discussed on here in the past several times...
To summarize the legality of spearing on a rebreather:
You CAN'T spear or lobster on a rebreather in Florida state waters.
You CAN'T spear snapper/grouper on a rebreather in Atlantic federal waters (NC-FL).
You CAN spear on a rebreather in Gulf of Mexico federal waters.
Cheers,
Mike

Hogfish is a wrasse (sp?) not a snapper. From what you said, I would consider hogfish on the list of breather separable fish (Gulf Federal Waters)... Right??

Hogs are managed by NMFS in the grouper snapper complex. There is a list of managed species at the NMFS website as well as the seperate councils.

No, while hogfish are indeed a wrasse, for the purposes of management it is included in the Snapper/Grouper Fishery Management Plan (FMP) under the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council. Amberjack and many other reef species are also included, so don't get caught up in the name of the FMP; refer to the link I posted earlier for a list of all species.
In the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council it is managed under the Reef Fish FMP. And as I mentioned in the 5th post of this thread, you can spear on rebreather in GOM Federal waters.

If you think about it. $7500 MSRP - Isn't that bad. $1500 training doesn't count in the equation becuase that is cognitive learning.
Scubapro Titanium Mk25/S600 - $1500 MSRP
6 HP120 Worthington Tank - $2400 MSRP
MaxAir 35 Compressor - $3500 MSRP
Only thing keeping me back is the regulations.

Rebreathers for spearing is useless unless your hunting big deep water carbo's that are very smart...
Hog's and grouper and dumb as dirt anyways, just hold your breath for about 5-8 seconds and they will sit there until you exhale. just make sure your sinking and not accending. As for Hog's, just tap your stringer on the top of your shaft. he will turn around and look at you like your crazy, thats when you feed him the freeshaft!
