As a year round surfer I find those reports to be better if your out 10miles on a boat...
Winds are soooo hard to predict too.

IF its sunny on Sunday, with light winds, some predict a little west in the winds, how does that fair for the protected ares like the bays/inlets etc????
I've always wanted to know!

For better local wind/wave knowledge I highly recommend Andrew Funk's forecast on www.surferssupplies.com
He is one of the owners of the shop and his S Nj (Ocean City) forecasts are absolutely spot on.

Yeah well just take a foot off wave heights. But for my 15 years of surfing I have seen the winds have been close. Believe me, it is part of my job for 12 years to give surf reports.

For Instance, since I work a block off the beach I can look right now and see the wind is indeed 15-20 with higher gusts and when I checked the surf it was indeed chest high and building.

Do u report for a particular site???
I also like J Gregorio's reports on Dukestorm.com
Doing surf reporting is very difficult indeed- my hat's off to ya!

It's hard to forcast.
But it is easy to do the daily surf reports, you just look and report what you see. You know.

Truuuuuuu!
The "big" sites like magicseaweed, swellinfo and wavewatch never have accurate wind forecasting....surfline does better than most with wave height, interval and direction etc. I've found surfersupplies to do better than most...dukestorm too.

So....have u ever speared in the inlets or behind the islands, under a bridge for example, when the ocean was shittty or had poor vis???
Behind N Wildwwod and SIC there is plenty of room....waters are calm there???

spear kook
09-19-2008, 01:11 PM
So weird at times. Other day our inlet was terrible and the ocean was better.
Never have dived near a bridge though.

The only thing that has been predictable is when there is high wind (even offshore winds sometimes) the vis sux. With wind you have waves and current that churns the hell out of crap. When the ocean is flat with any really light wind (especially east wind) the water is clear as hell around my way.

vis up here in belmar has been pretty bad since hanna came through and gave us waves... not that i complainin about that- surf got pretty damn good!

i do a surf report here...http://tubespit.blogspot.com

I obviously live to surf.....but damn, id sure like to spear again soon!!!
WHEN WHEN WHEN???????????????????????
Surfing on Sunday w light winds....might look around to spear for shits and giggles...

brad.swells
09-20-2008, 04:55 PM
Yeah-I was thinking the vis might clear up in time to kill dinner tommmorrw. If not... light winds and a little swell should be fun.

Haha you guys sound like me. My friend that spears but dosen't surf always says I'm a huge condradiction because I'm either praying for swell or praying for flatness. He's right but right now I need a barrel so let's hope it's firing in the morning.

Outlook looks pretty bad for spearing as I thinks it's forecast to be a NE mess all next week.

brad.swells
09-22-2008, 10:30 AM
Well.. I surfed alot sunday, but didnt spear. Afternoon surf session was accompanied by increased winds, and a low tide... crap vis.
Waves were pretty good early on, though!

TriggerNJ
09-22-2008, 01:09 PM
Yeah that was fun but not quite the season kick off swell I had hoped for. Not that I'm complaining though.

surf2live
09-29-2008, 07:39 AM
Surf was soooooo good Sunday- got plenty of barrels....surfed from 8am till 130pm...I'm beat.

Looks like it'll flatten out by this upcoming weekend!!! I can't believe I'm stoked for flatness too!!! Its been too long since I've speared!

Small/no waves + offfshores = good vis....??? Right?

brad.swells
09-29-2008, 01:48 PM
Yeah, Im thinkin the vis is decent by tues/weds. There is a low well offshore that should shoot us some long period swell, though. Spear and surf? Could i be that lucky?

It was damn good on LI sunday, and this morning on LI was rediculously fun. I got barrelled off my nut.

brad.swells
09-30-2008, 05:18 PM
I went out a bit before noon today- too bad I didnt get out earlier. The outgoing tide, and thin water was mucking up viz. It was probably good on the incoming around high tide.
On the upside- I found a 6 foot gaff stuck in the rocks on my regular jetty. Now I just need a boat, and a big fish to pull over the rail...

brad.swells
10-01-2008, 01:50 PM
I went out this morning- viz wasnt all that great. I did manage to find a nice blackfish chillin in between rocks...and missed. sheeeit. Then to add injury to insult, a r&r guy brought in a 36" striper. sheeeit. again.

Is incoming or outgoing tide better for vis? I cant seem to figure it out. anybody, anybody, bueller?

surf2live
10-01-2008, 02:37 PM
My understanding, and limited experience, is you want slack high tide just before outgoing....so I've been successful about an hour before high (incoming) and particularly dead high tide, as well as when the tide just begins to recede.
I've seen vis change from 3feet to 15+feet in a matter of minutes....
Having more water in the area seems to help a lot...
That's my two cents!!

brad.swells
10-02-2008, 11:20 AM
I got out today right at the end of slack- and the outgoing brought viz down pretty damn fast.

Despite that- I missed a shot on a striper...and then a bigger one almost tail swiped my face. The thud of a tail swipe is so cool underwater.

I feel like my aim just friggin sux. When i started, i would hit everything i shot at...now i miss everytime. So frustrating!

Hoping the offshores and lack of waves will help with viz. I havent been able to see more than a few feet in like a month.

brad.swells
10-03-2008, 01:32 PM
went out just before high tide today- viz was crap due to the south wind. Like cant see the tip of my spear crap. The wind has gone offshre, and the water's lookin pretty blue. Maybe the viz got better. Might go out once i digest that giant sandwich I ate for lunch... or else i'd be chumming with chicken cutlet.

surf2live
10-03-2008, 04:33 PM
Did 2 places in N Wildwood and the Stone Harbor....offshore winds for sure but vis sucked...wtf? Maybe cause winds are so hard.
Hoping overnight offshore will help...supposed to lighten up too...plenty of sun.
Fingers crossed tonite!

brad.swells
10-03-2008, 05:23 PM
I havent been abel to get any decent viz at all. Today was probably the worst- i went out twice, too! I dont get it. No recent precip, No waves, offshore wind...and still crap viz? This is harder than surf forecasting!

I went out this evening(after the sandwich cleared), and i couldnt see anything. I swam straight into the bottom, bounced off a few rocks, and called it a day.

anybody have any viz forecasting skills?

Thank you guys for these updates. I think I might try to go out tomorrow or Tuesday. I think Manesquan inlet from the Point Pleasant side might be a fun place. I've had luck there before, this time of year.

This morning vis was 6ft with 8ft hazy patches. Lot of nice tog. Saw some decent stripers around 35 inches or so. I was too trigger happy and shot a 6 pound tog right away and half hour later saw many bigger ones.
Right now wind is starting to blow harder north with cloud cover.

surf2live
10-05-2008, 06:33 PM
The vis at my fav spot was 10-12ft....very clear and fun!!!
Unfortunatley my rookiness makes me a bad shot.....my buddy (Fletchosaurus) and I passed up many tog looking to kill a few tog that were easily 20+ inches and fat....saw triggers, small striper and many others.
I was in for approx 4hrs....soooo fun.
I also ruined my spearpoint after several misses...
Sooo stoked....now I need some jersey shacks to make me happy!

brad.swells
10-05-2008, 08:39 PM
sounds like i missed it! I was up in LI, and i figured viz would kinda suck due to cloud cover. Was it sunny by you guys, or didnt the lack of sun effect it?

hopefully tomorrow for me!

surf2live
10-06-2008, 06:07 AM
The sun was in and out, but strong enough it didn't matter.
We waited till absolute high tide- dunno how much of a difference that made since we didn't look beforehand.
I would think today would be good as well provided that there are offshores, or the wind is light.
Striper are just showing up....stone a good one!

Thanks for the heads up. This site is great for me since I would normally have to drive an hour and a half to see if the water is good. It's funny how the season started out with so many people, like myself, feeling like spearfishing was getting too popular and were being a bit apprehensive about giving out spots and tips. I've matured, and have changed my ways now that I need to know things for myself, haha!

I really need to get something before it's too late in the season. I missed the best months this year because I was too busy with work.

jumped in the inlet by me. it was actually my first time out there- as LD would say... pretty pretty good.

viz was way better than most days i have been in the ocean, and there was alot of cool stuff to see (shoot)

goes to show ya, one never knows.

Yo braddah! Your conditioner tip worked sooo well- just put some in a spray bottle with water and applied to the inside of the suit before I put it on--- worked like a charm! Mahalo!

I might hit up Point Pleasant first since I like that Jetty cause there's not a ton of fishermen at the top of the south jetty. I'll run up to Belmar if it sucks

I might be up for diving friday. High tide is near 5pm? might be good for stripers since they seem to like to come around later in the day when the bait fish show up. Where do you want to go? You can say it here, it's so late in the season that it's only good if people go out for one last dive. I broke my shaft the other day but I have a 70cm pneumatic.

Monday's out for me. Sunday I may be able to do a short dive depending on how much work I get done. Sunday I could dive south though as I have to head south Sun night anyway. I could just do a dive on my way south. Wildwoods to far south though. I'll only be going as far as AC so anywhere between is good for me.

I'm thinking either Saturday or Sunday (before the Eagles game). Let me know what you guys decide, if you don't mind one more. I've always wanted to try either Brigantine or Barnegat...maybe that's a good mid way point. I also found a spot in Ocean City, but haven't had much luck with the vis yet.

Was it cause of the NE winds??? waves???
Which tide did you try??

TriggerNJ

Was probably from the light north wind that was blowing but who knows.(north is typically not good this far up because of the bay) I did the incoming. It's still flat. The water right in the surf was clear but thats it. Once you went anywhere else there was a real nasty brown layer of water that started at about 10 -15ft down.
