Divers and Hoop Netters at Catalina

We almost got into a fight with a couple dives on Saturady. I was out at the 4th of July anchorage, this side of Two Harbors area, and we set a few hoops out. Our second time around, a boat full of free divers comes up with 15' of us and one guys yells out, "lets check his hoops to see if he has any." The second looks over and explains, "divin' for bugs has been a lot easier lately because now all we have to do is go around and pick um out of nets!" They jump in and start working the area right around my hoops!!! What in the F&#% are they doing! Is this a southern California thing? I have never seen anything like that in Ventura or SB! I free dive half the time and hoop half the time, so I relate to both sides but,...? Is this a turf war or someting?! My uncle and I were ready to throw down!
As for the hooping, we got skunked. The eels were so bad we only got in three round and ran out of bait. We did net 5 morays, 2 were huge 3-4 footers. I hope those divers stuck their hand in the wrong hole without checking first!!!

Sounds like BS to me as I know no divers that would be as blatantly stupid as to try something like that. They may be out there, but how many people are so stupid to pull up to another boat and say lets steal his bugs? Pulled up within 15'? Not only unsafe, but no freediver ever wants to get within 15' of another boat.
So this was you that got this treatment? Or something on allcoast? Not bashing, but its quite the urban legend.

This is why I changed my plans to not dive Two Harbors on opening night. I heard its a turf war out there. Stayed home and only got two but I wasn't almost in a fight or run over by a boat.

I have been diving these waters and most others for 30 plus years, and I have never heard of such nonsense.
I also have dove with over half of the real and hardcore free divers on this coast, and not one of those guys would ever do such a thing.
Recently while diving the L B breakwall, there were numerous hoopers and boats. So many that we had to be quite carefull to avoid wrapping a prop.
But even though we were suiting up right next to hoop nets and ropping in all around them. (because we had no choice).
Not one person got out of line or said a word. We are talking in 4 hours of diving with probably 30 hoop boats.
So, it seems this story is either a lot of bull, or the whole story is not being told or both.
I have found most hoopers and divers are just doing their thing and don't bother anyone.
Keep a cool head boy's theres plenty for everyone.

Exactly !!!.. I had a commercial lobster boat circling near me checking his traps and didn't say a word to me...but I got freaked out when I was 15' from the boat in the DAY TIME...Forget the night time...divers just don't do that...besides the jokers on Allcoast are idiots..and they argue worse than we do on some of our posts... I call BS..
