Ok long time no post so here we go with all the fact stats.
Grounds:
110-130
vis. 30 to 50 feet (i never saw 80 or 90)
bottom temp: 67 to 69
we were in the low 500's to low 600's for the trip east side of the grounds.
NOW THE COLOR:
I first of all wish to thank Jeff, Jerry, Jimmy, and Art for being patient and waiting for the front to blow through. We all know that mother nature is hell during the winter and a forcast is only accurate up to 12 hours out and maybe not even that. We had to delay about 12 hours the departure time so that we wouldnt get our nuts handed to us in a little tiny brown bag, but we did manage to get 2 drops in on saturday. Our first drop was in 120 feet of water. On our descent i noticed all the baitfish that came up to greet us, the only problem is they were NOT baitfish. They were 15 to 20 pound gags. Yes boys and girls it is winter. Hot damn and grab a stick it is gags galore again. I hit bottom and looked at about 50+ gags staring at me from about 20 feet away and shot one with loving finesse (stoned it). While stringing him i look up and there is a massive boulder looking at me. Yep, 40 to 50 pound true black. He was calm i was calm. The other diver swimming down the ledge wasnt. Bye Bye blackie. Hint: NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS DO NOT MOVE FAST OR AGGRESSIVE. Oh did i mention the herd (not school) but herd of Red Snappies that came in. Not many but anywhere fro 50 to 200 (damn hard to count when they block your vision). Jan. 1st we go back, i kill all of them.:) So that dive i got some nice gags (grey's to you east coast guys) and some hogs etc. The other guys got lots of nice fish including a 15 pound hog. Next drop was quite a distance away and took us almost 8 minutes to get there (about 800 feet away). Jesus christ the fish show was impressive. We went down on this little spot and before we could even adjust the 30 to 40 pound jacks were swarming. They were as thick as flies on a 3 day old catfish carcass at Ballast Point pier. Oh yea the gags, DAMN, jerrie got a 25 pounder right off the bat, i tried shooting some but my shaft got deflected off the jacks TWICE!!! I still got 2 gags around 20 pounds and 9 hogs from 5 to 10 pounds. The trick here though is i never moved. I also never looked up so i have no idea what else was there. The spot was so loaded that i never even got to the rock. There was just no need. Grouper were biting all night long. Notice i said NIGHT. I got slapped and broken off so many times it was ridiculous, and folks that is with a 114hl(6/0) and 60 pound line with the drag cranked down with pliers. The rest of the trip had many great dives but I think you all get the idea. The grounds in the winter are insane. Each season has it best show.
WINTER: GROUPER AND JACKS
SPRING: GROUPER AND JACKS (GO'S ARE BEGINING TO SHOW)
SUMMER: HOGS, HOGS , HOGS, MANGO'S AND HOGS (DID I MENTION HOGS?)
FALL: MANGO'S, HOGS, AND A FEW BLACKS.
This type of diving is almost addictive when you see a 20 pound black 5 feet away and just sitting there staring at you. Big and i mean BIG!!! hogs swim right at ya and try to intimidate you! Fish so dumb that you have got to remove them from the gene pool because you feel it is your duty. Anyone fortunate enough to dive the grounds right now is in for a real treat.
NOW THE SHAMLESS PLUG:
We thought the weather would be bad but it changed dramaticly for this weekend. Yes it is short notice but we are trying to get out on friday night for the weekend. If you are interested give me a call.
