Heya, i am currently working on a sportfishing boat out of Cairns and have been doing a bit of spearing. After the season (December) I would like to go somewhere for 3 weeks to a month to surf and spearfish. I hear fiji is one of the best places in the world. I want to stay somewhere cheap, I have no problem camping on the beach. I figure I can get some great spearing off a less popular island but not sure whats there. Any advice? Any other world class spots with surf and spearing right from shore?

fiji kicks ass it would probably be better to rent a boat for the time your there to fish+surf maybey a small sailboat or something. make sure you go during prime time so you dont miss all the pelagics. dont piss of the locals by not checking in with the chief if your going to take fish from an island.

yes ...normaly you should visit the chief from island or village ..and make the KAWA ceremonial...(must bring yr kwa and 2 box of cigarettes!!!!!)

There's an island south of Viti Levu called Kadavu. On the island there's a pretty inexpensive (at least it was when I was there in 2003; damn that made me feel old to say that) dive resort called Matava. Used to be run by a diver/surfer named Niles. Cool place. Nothing fancy, very eco-friendly. AMAZING diving. Went there to surf and wasnt into spearfishing when I was there, but dove a few of the days with my chick. Amazing place. Try them.
