hey guys im new

whats a SHAFT 18'' ? 12"" ?
how do you define that measurement 5/16" ?
whats the 5 stand for
whats the 16 stand for

Looking to build a pole spear, Aircraft aluminium ?
is there a code for that ?
difference between aircraft aluminium and aluminium ?

Thanks Guys, really envy the fish you catch, and the expertise

Welcome!
Where are you? Do you use the metric system?
The shaft is the main part of the spear just a tube usually 4 feet to 9 feet long. They have a 5/16 inch (same as .3125mm) thread at the end (like a bolt welded to the end of the aluminum tube) that you attach a tip(usually 18 or 12 inches long).

Any type of aluminum will work. Do a search for DIY polespear.

The tip can be anything from a paralyzer 3 prong, slip tip, flopper tip.

Hope this helps your question seamed confusing.

The shaft is a rod of heat treated stainless spring steel. This is the part with a speartip that goes through the fish. The 18 and 12 must be the length of the shaft in inches.

5/16 is a fraction. 5 parts of 16.

So if an inch is divided into 16 parts.

1 inch = 16/16" one inch
1/2 inch = 8/16" half inch
1/4 inch = 4/16" quarter inch

5/16" is 1/16 of an inch larger than a quarter inch and refers to the diameter of the threading. This is a common threading, but not all threading is 5/16" and the threading depth and amount countersunk depth/diameter can vary among polespears.

Think about aluminum foil. It is very soft and flexible. Would not want that for an airplane. There are different alloys and processes of aluminum for the proper strength, flexibility, light weight, brittleness, etc. depending on the application.

Im from Sydney Australia 2099. we use
millimetres, not feet
centimetres, not inches

why is an inch divided into 16 ?

"The shaft is the main part of the spear just a tube usually 4 feet to 9 feet long"
"The shaft is a rod of heat treated stainless spring steel"

im confused.

16 is the smallest denominator for the fraction on the size of the shafts width.

A polespear is a long, usually a metal pole "shaft" with a point on the end w/ a flopper barb or 3-point prong to spear fish. A shaft for a speargun is narrower usually "7mm" depending on the gun's size, and it's length can be any size depending on the length of the gun.

Is 2099 the year. Does that mean you are from the future?:D

I do not know the exact reason for the divisions of an inch by multiples of two. It may have to do with the ease of determining the midpoint between 2 points. We do the same with volume and weight.

I use these common divisions of an inch:
1/2
1/4
1/8
1/16
1/32
1/10
1/100
1/1000

Take a look at the Ray Odor link. I think the shaft is technically the part that holds the speartip. So on a polespear this would be both the aluminum rod and stainless steel rod are the shaft by this definition.

But some of us consider the aluminum rod the handle or pole.

Some polespear handles are made out of tubular metal or fiberglass.

Ray calls the stainless steel rod the shank. He uses both 5/16 threading and 6mm threading.
